Protective styles have been receiving backlash in the natural hair community, but here are some truths I don’t hear people talk about often;
šŸ“ŒLess manipulation: like it or not, protective styles when done correctly, reduce unnecessary manipulation and make it easier to retain length
šŸ“ŒMoisture retention: with your hair in a protective style, you can easily carry out your moisture routine and care for the ends of your hair
šŸ“ŒConvenience: life gets busy and hair care can be the last thing on our minds. Keeping our hair tucked away in a protective style means we don’t have to worry about styling it every day.

I know that everyone’s hair is different, and wearing your natural hair out is beautiful. But if your goal is length retention, protective styles can be very helpful when done correctly.

What’s your take on protective styles? Do you find them helpful or do you prefer wearing your hair out?

These are some of the habits I’ve been doing and I’ve seen massive results from them

We have less than 3 months left in the year and we can make good use of it. Let’s be intentional and go on this journey together.

If your hair feels dry, you can try out this deep moisture treatment.

I especially focused the mix on my ends because they are the oldest parts of my hair. This is because healthy hair growth isn’t just about how fast your hair grows but how much length you’re retaining.

Consistently caring for your hair will help you reduce breakage and retain length which will translate to longer healthieršŸ¤ŽšŸ–¤

Will you be trying out this treatment

Some of us are still trying to recover from lost edges, yet we’re still going back to the same tight hairstyle😃

Help me help you. If a hairstyle is causing pain or too much tension, speak up! Tell your hairstylist to loosen it.

And if you’re tired of relying on stylists, you can learn to do simple, low-tension hairstyles yourself. Don’t worry, I’ll be showing you how 🩷

Send this to that friend still wearing a tight hairstyle.🤭

If you’re wondering whether your hair is actually growing, try this;
Put your hair in a style using your own hair and leave it for a few weeks. By week 2 or 3, your roots will start showing the evidence

So, your hair is growing. The goal is to retain more of that growth by reducing unnecessary breakage.

And that’s what we’re talking about here
Follow for simple hair care lessons that actually worksšŸ¤Ž

Not every hairstyle is protective. And for me, I had to stop doing the styles that were breaking my hair, especially around my edges.

Here are some of the things I’ve learned;
1. I ditched styles that required so much manipulation
Knotless braids and styles that required hot water or gel to make them sleek had to go.

2. I became more intentional with extensions
I noticed that some of the extensions I used left my hair feeling dry, so I started sticking to styling with just my hair or using lightweight crochet extensions.

3. I learnt to take my hair down properly
 I had to learn patience when it came to taking down my hair. I now take my time and use water-based products + oil to help loosen my hair gently.

If protecting your hair means changing what you’ve always done, then do it

Mini braids are my go-to protective style for retaining length

You can adapt the same method with twists, cornrows, or any low-manipulation style that works for your hair.

What’s your go-to protective style?
