A Little Story About Being “Extra.”

When I moved to Los Angeles, I came here for one reason: to become an actor.

Life had other plans.

Almost immediately, I fell into production. For the next few years, I built an incredible career behind the camera, mostly working in unscripted television. I was grateful for every opportunity, but there was always a quiet voice reminding me why I came to LA in the first place.

To act.

So I made a decision. I started taking acting classes consistently again. I poured into the craft. I auditioned. I waited. I kept showing up.

But the bookings weren’t coming.

Then one day I swallowed my pride and thought, You know what? I haven’t done background work since I lived on the East Coast. Maybe I’ll do it again. At the very least, I can work toward another SAG voucher.

So I submitted.

I booked background on The Bold and the Beautiful.

What I thought was taking a step backward ended up being the biggest step forward I could’ve taken.

I showed up with the same energy I bring to every room. Kind, professional, prepared, and genuinely excited to be there. I treated being “just background” with the same respect I would’ve given a series regular role.

That background role turned into a recurring role as Alex, the supervisor and bartender at the Bikini Bar.

It’s funny how life works.

The opportunity I almost overlooked became the bridge to exactly what I’d been praying for.

This reminded me that no opportunity is too small when you’re walking toward your purpose. Sometimes the door you want isn’t the first one that opens. Sometimes you have to be willing to walk through a different one with excellence, humility, and gratitude.

You never know who’s watching. You never know what one “small” yes can become.

So if you’re feeling like you’re taking a step backward, maybe you’re not. Maybe you’re just taking the step that launches you forward.

Don’t give up. Keep showing up. Stay ready.

And never be afraid to be “extra.” by @sincerecato
