I’ve been reading Billie Holiday’s biography this past week, and it’s given me an even deeper appreciation for jazz music. Reading about the sacrifices she, along with so many other Black musicians and singers, had to make just to do what they were passionate about during a time when they could perform for a room full of people but still be told to enter through the back door has really stayed with me.
Jazz has always been a part of me. My mom would play Billie Holiday for me while I was still in her stomach, and somehow, it’s always been the one kind of music that makes me feel whole. It lets me feel every emotion at once the beautiful ones, the painful ones, and everything in between.
I have four chapters left, and her story has already inspired me to appreciate two things more deeply... my freedom, and my love for music. The freedom to listen to it, create around it, love it openly, and simply exist in spaces that artists like Billie had to fight to be allowed into. It makes the music feel even more sacred to me. by @sincerelymarren
