IT’S A WRAP! 📽️🍿🗣️

And just like that, Reclaiming Our Spaces: 2nd Edition came to a close. It was an evening of images, stories, ideas, and one shared space.

We premiered BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions (2025), directed by Khalil Joseph, alongside two amazing short films: Incognito (2024), directed by Chol Jurkuch, and Under Your Floor (2025), directed by Abijah Lang’at.

Three films. Three distinct voices. And three ways of examining our memory, challenging our history, and reimagining our future.

We closed the evening with a rich conversation featuring our guest panelist, Furaha Ruguru, directors Chol Jurkuch and Abijah Lang’at. This brought the three films to life through real-time conversation.

To our audience, thank you very much for showing up, leaning in, and making this space what it is.

A special thank you to Furaha Ruguru, Chol Jurkuch, and Abijah Lang’at for sharing their work, knowledge, and experiences with us. And to our wonderful volunteers: thank you too for ensuring that our program ran without a hitch. ❤️

The projector may be off for now, but the conversations will live with us.
We’re already turning our attention to our third edition. More details soon.
Until then, take care.
Tutakutana tena KAYA. Hivi Karibuni!!!

The encyclopedia Africana plays a central role at the core of BLKNWS. Conceived nearly a century before its 1999 publication, this monumental text documents the political, social, and cultural legacies of African peoples and their global diaspora, providing the foundational archive that BLKNWS activates for the screen.

The vision for the project originated in 1909 with sociologist, historian, and civil rights theorist W. E. B. Du Bois. Du Bois sought to assemble an objective, scientific compendium detailing the history, social institutions, and achievements of people of African descent. His scope extended well beyond the continent, encompassing individuals of African heritage across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

The project faced decades of systemic obstacles, primarily a persistent lack of institutional funding. Driven by a commitment to compile the archive on African soil, Du Bois relocated to Accra, Ghana, in his final years to continue the work. Although Du Bois passed away in 1963 without completing the text, his core premise — that Africa has never been separate from the global historical narrative — remained the guiding principle for subsequent generations of academics.

In the late twentieth century, an international coalition of scholars resumed the project, translating Du Bois’s initial framework into Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience. By synthesizing political history alongside critical analyses of literature, music, and the visual arts, Africana serves as an essential engine for BLKNWS, providing the historical continuity and conceptual framework needed to reimagine contemporary Black media, art, and consciousness.

Let’s experience this powerful art piece together. Come to share your insights during our post-screening talk.
