Logistics meant we didn't have John Hannah with us until his first day of shooting in Caithness. We did a test make-up on a willing model the week before to ensure the colouration was correct.
Fin Man was a Selkie character, a human seal hybrid. Facial expression was important as was seeing John through the make-up. I went back to old methods and made a cowl from latex, calico & lycra. This cowl was adhered to the wetsuit with stitching & prosaide. Ears were smoothed down beneath the bald cap. All images here are on set before GABHA STUDIOS (VFX) worked their magic with the enlarged dark eyes and whiskers.

Released in the UK 48 years ago today. 48 YEARS!! Mum bought me this from Woolworths in Wembley the week of it's release. This album has been well played over the decades but treasured. My entire bedroom was a shrine to Blondie and I danced round the living room in my mum's slip and Dr Scholls waving a chiffon scarf emulating the icon that is Deborah Harry. 🖤🤍🖤

I keep seeing photos on here of children applying make-up on adults. It's adorable and reminds me of the one time Noah did my make-up when he was six. It was my birthday and we went out for a family lunch. Noah sat opposite me surveying his work all afternoon. I cheated and retained my eyesight by applying my own mascara. It's not that far off my regular look so the boy did good. He chose my outfit too.

"What it Feels Like For a Girl" is now available to stream in the US. (typical late post from me). Paris Lees, the brilliant writer of the series & the book joined us for a cameo to end all cameos in Ep5. Paris arrived with a wonderful vision for the character, it was an honour to create this headpiece for her, part millinery part wig making.

The 79th Edinburgh International Film Festival lineup has been announced and we’re excited to see work by our talented HODs.

‘The Incomer’ with Make Up Designer Siobhan Harper-Ryan @siobhanharperryanmakeup, directed by Louis Paxton for Pilea Pictures. ‘The Incomer’ will open the festival on the 13th August.
‘Extra Geography’ with 1st AD Charlie Elliot @_charlie_elliot_1stad_, directed by BAFTA award winning director Molly Manners for Brock Media, Film4, BFI.
‘Queen At Sea’ with Production Sound Mixer David Giles, directed by Lance Hammer for The Bureau.

The festival will take place from the 13th-19th August.
