Thursday February 19th 2025 I had the honor of standing with my fellow Abenaki First Nation of Odanak members, leaders, and allies against indigenous identity theft and fraud. We presented to VT State Legislators at the Statehouse in Montpelier, VT, in the heart of our traditional Abenaki territory, Ndakina, on Lake Champlain. Our creation stories speak on the glaciers retreating at the end of the last ice age, creating this very valley. For as long as time can remember this has been our home.

Indigenous identity theft is something we have been fighting against for as long as I’ve been alive, and within the last few decades it has become far more rampant, to the point that Vermont taxpayers are unknowingly paying for peoples of 100% European descent who claim to be Abenaki, descended from my family names, and cousin family names, and to have spent time learning our culture in the home where my grandmother grew up, somehow without any of us ever knowing.

The federal government has denied these groups federal recognition because less than 1% of the members who were in these groups had any Abenaki ancestry at all. And those who did, the single digit amount of them, were from families who came from Odanak. They were lied to. But the state of VT granted these people state recognition on the basis of not providing any genealogy or proof of ancestry.

For reference, I am an enrolled band member of Odanak First Nation, a Canadian Federally recognized First Nation. This means my Abenaki ancestors are from the 20th and 21st century, not the 16th and 17th, and that I am only a few generations removed from the reserve, but these people? The other 99%? Have no reservation in their blood, let alone Abenaki DNA. They are entirely French Canadian, with a few having an “Indian Princess” ancestor from the 1600s, who was not Abenaki. Having an ancestor from centuries ago does not quantify having an indigenous identity nor does it justify collecting benefits meant for actual indigenous peoples. Which is exactly what these people are doing.

The genealogy for these people has been published in scholarly journals. We’ve known it to be true for a long time, now, it is fact. taken in Burlington, Vermont by @siohmosis

As the year comes to an end I wanna thank everyone who took the time and energy to listen to my music, my art, and to support me in what I do. I create music because it’s what I love and because truthfully, I need to. Musics always been the way I know best to express myself and cope with life. These last few years been so chaotic and so much has changed, but we keep it moving and continue to create and pour our passion out into our art for the sake of the creation, and in the name of healing and timeless music ❤️‍🩹🤘thank you for listening 🫶

In 2024 I dropped my 6 track, self-produced EP Little Hawk, and dropped 2 music videos for my songs, Fumes and TxT mSsGs 🎥 Been a lowkey year but I’m still growing, learning, adjusting, connecting, and working as hard as I can, so I’m proud to see the growth 🙏🥹
