Another perspective on ‚Atlas einer Durchsicht’ photographed by Hans Schlimbach. ‚Atlas einer Durchsicht’ COUNTERFLOWS
FRISE Künstler*innenhaus, Hamburg
08.–15.08.2026 A rotating steel light drum projects the course of the Alster, from its source to the Außenalster, onto the surrounding walls. The moving projection circles an Alster-shaped water basin, translating the river’s course into a continuously shifting drawing of light within the space. Glass water lilies refer to the ecological transformations of the river and the disappearance of aquatic plants as a result of the straightening and modification of its banks. An installation of glass droplets transforms the transient form of water into a lasting material state, exploring the relationship between movement, stillness and transformation. Slag, as a by-product of industrial processes, refers to the material history of human interventions in landscapes and water systems. Water, glass, light, steel and sediments become different carriers of traces and information. The installation explores how hydrological processes, human interventions and changes over time become inscribed in materials and made perceptible as a spatial landscape. — Installation views from COUNTERFLOWS

’Atlas einer Durchsicht’ Julia Nordholz FRISE Künstler*innenhaus 08. - 15.08.2026 The work follows the Alster from its source towards the Außenalster, tracing the marks inscribed in and along its course – deposits, shifts, interventions, movements and disappearances. It emerges from research conducted along the river: sediment samples, field recordings, microscopic images and historical materials become fragments of a landscape in constant transformation. Water falls into an Alster-shaped basin, continuously disturbing and remaking its image. A rotating steel light drum carries the course of the river across the surrounding architecture, while field recordings of trees, leaves, wind and rain form another map of the Alster through sound. Water, sediment, light, sound, glass and slag come together as a fragile topography – one that continually dissolves and reconfigures itself within the space. Installation view from ’Counterflows’ at FRISE, Hamburg. Grateful to everyone who contributed to the research, technical development and installation of this work.
