SISTERS SEEN
Women photographers photographing women photographers.
Both photographer and photographed — together, made visible.
A project by @f22aop
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
@sisters_seen is a collaborative portrait project by members of the @f22aop, an all-female offshoot of the @assocphoto.

It’s a simple yet powerful concept: women photographers capturing one another to promote visibility and celebrate a supportive community. In this creative process, we become both photographer and subject, getting to know our sisters better.

I waited for a participant to contact me, but when no one did, I sent out a mass email requesting to pair up. A flood of emails returned with the same anticipation and eagerness to take part. Hermione was the first to respond!

@hermionehodgson_photography is a talented lifestyle and sports photographer who was a recent finalist with her incredible shots of roller skaters in the AOP 39TH AWARDS.

Her photography is natural, documentary-inspired portraiture that focuses on authenticity, a human connection, and storytelling.
We chose to photograph each other in our own studio environments, both keen to have portraits taken that we can use moving forward.

I wanted to give Hermione an image that she has not seen of herself before. I took a beauty dish, a key light, some consistent light, and a home-dyed backdrop to set the scene. I love rich, saturated images to produce a controlled and strong visual detail, with a hint of theatre and cinematography.

We had a fun day and with constant chatter we drove to her studio..

I paired up with the brilliant photographer Ruth Samuels for @sisters_seen, a project by members of the @f22aop that aims to connect and celebrate the community of women and non binary people in photography by making portraits of each other.

@ruthsamuelsphoto is a documentary photographer who won the AOP Emerging Talent Award for her series The Beholder. She has also been shortlisted for the Portrait of Britain competition and received an honourable mention from the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards amongst other achievements. Everything Ruth does, her passion and desire for justice, her genuine interest in people and cultures and her commitment to amplify underrepresented voices stem from her religious faith so it seemed fit to meet at her local church in South London.

I recently had the pleasure of shooting with the wonderful Angeles Rodenas for the @f22aop project, Sisters Seen. @sisters_seen brings together female photographers to connect, learn about one another, and bond over a shared dislike of being photographed (that last part isn’t officially part of the Sisters Seen brief, but we all know it’s true!).

As well as being an excellent photographer, @angierodenas is also a journalist with a passion for environmental justice. We met the day after London’s first proper downpour in at least two months, and at a time where the impact of climate change in the UK couldn’t have been clearer. For Angeles, hope is a key ingredient of initiating change. It felt appropriate that the ground was less arid than it had been, and that the tiny patches of green stood a chance of surviving for just that little bit longer.

SISTERS SEEN is a collaborative portrait project by members of the @f22aop . It’s rooted in a simple yet powerful concept: women photographers capturing one another to promote visibility and celebrate a supportive community. In this creative process, we simultaneously become both photographer and subject, getting to know our sisters better.

Marina @oh_marfuta is an award-winning fine art still life photographer and conceptual image-maker whose work explores how experiences and interactions shape people and relationships through the materiality of paper. We share a passion for still life, both believing that classical paintings and the natural world are inexhaustible sources of inspiration for our photographic practice, alongside a shared love for London’s beautiful parks. When we decided to shoot each other’s portraits, we agreed to use our favourite parks as the locations.
I chose my personal favourite, St. James’s Park, for her session. Prior to the shoot, I was inspired by a portrait at the National Gallery painted by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, titled Woman Seated in the Garden. The subject’s easy, relaxed posture against a dynamic, lush green background reminded me of Marina’s quiet, gentle, and warm character. To retain the vivid colours of the scenery while preserving beautiful natural skin tones, I captured this portrait on Kodak Portra film.

When Chantel and I were talking about how we wanted to photograph one another for the Sisters Seen project, we decided to try each other’s style. Our backgrounds and photography styles are really different, with Chantel’s beauty images and portraits being made in a very controlled studio scenario, while I have so far preferred the ‘chaos’ of location / environmental portraiture.

Making these portraits in Chantel’s style didn’t feel like an effort at all, but rather like we were just playing. Maybe I’ve found a new door to go through. Thank you Chantel and Sisters Seen.

I first met Chantel at a talk at the Photographers’ Gallery, but we had interacted online plenty before - through multiple WhatsApp groups that exist for photographers, and through the @f22aop network for members of the @assocphoto. So when a challenge was set by the F22 group to take portraits of other members, I immediately jumped at it and Chantel was the first person i contacted.

Our photography styles are very different and we wanted to highlight this in our images - while challenging one another to try the other’s style.

These images are of Chantel in my style. I asked her to choose a location close to her heart, and she immediately picked the Hackney Peace Mural. She told me she remembers waiting for the bus with her mum and sisters, at a time well before smart phones were in everyone’s hands, and looking up, fascinated by the many faces on the wall. Life and London may have changed drastically since then, but this mural has been kept in impeccable condition, a tangible link to past generations, so we wanted to honour it.

In a time when AI and automation are part of so many conversations and lives, it was really refreshing and joyful making a new friend in real life and exchanging stories about life and photography.

Thank you Chantel and thank you Sisters Seen.

Had a great time photographing the lovely @nicola_tree recently for the @f22aop collaborative project, Sisters Seen. @sisters_seen brings female photographers together to coax one another in front of the lens for a change, creating the opportunity to see ourselves from different perspectives, and connect with each other.

My original plan had been to visit Nicola’s studio, experiment with light, and leave environmental portraiture behind for the day. But then I fell in love with the craft and personality that oozes out of every detail of the home she and her family have built. I just couldn’t resist!

Thanks for being so cool, Nicola. I’ll invite myself around again soon 🤍🩷

I met fellow photographer Michelle @mclee917 through the F22 community of women in photography, and we paired up to take part in the @sisters_seen project.

@sisters_seen is a collaborative project that stemmed from a simple but powerful idea: women photographers photographing each other. Resulting in not just a portrait series— but a creative exchange, a mirror held up by peers, and a collective act of visibility.

Michelle is a true artist and I’ve always admired this about her. She has a way to bring familiar shapes and colours and to turn them into something uncanny and utterly beautiful.

So when we decided to photograph each-other for @sisters_seen I knew I wanted to photograph her in a way that would combine the calm and space that characterises her work, with the warmth of her personality.

She then photographed me on film, and I absolutely loved seeing her process and being led by her.

Thank you @f22aop and @sisters_seen for encouraging us to look at the experience from both sides of the camera.

Elodie @elodiegportraits is a brilliant food and portrait photographer who was recently named a finalist in the World Food Photography Awards. Having grown up in Provence, she carries the secret to “le bonheur de la vie”—sunshine, good food, and community, all of which are beautifully radiate through her work.
My portrait of Elodie was taken in her studio. I chose to shoot with Kodak Gold film to infuse the image with warm, sunlit tones that perfectly mirror her bright personality.

Sisters Seen is a collaborative portrait project by members of @f22aop with a simple but powerful idea: women photographers photographing women photographers. We become both of photographer and the subject.

@wendycarrigphotography is a fellow founding member of @f22aop and an exceptional photographer and storyteller. I’ve long valued Wendy’s support, insight and encouragement particularly when it comes to entering awards. I have learned so much from her over the years.
Inspired by her photobook The Woman Who Fell to Earth, I wanted to incorporate elements of that story into her portrait: the motorcycle helmet, leathers and beach finds, while aiming to capture her playful spirit, creativity and strength.
You can see Wendy’s portrait of me at @sisters_seen

SISTERS SEEN is a new arts initiative with a simple but powerful idea: women photographers photographing women photographers.
In an act of collective visibility created by the supportive community @f22aop we become both the photographer and the photographed.

This is my portrait of photographer Sarah Hogan whose gaze and visibility remain strong through a collage of layered reflections and glass.
Sarah is known for her award winning interiors & still life work (she is the holder of a coveted AOP gold award) and her vast array of published works, notably the book Bold British Design. She is also a highly accomplished portrait photographer and won first place in the @nationalportraitgallery's Family Jubilee Competition. It is the NPG who are leading today's International Portrait Day celebrations. The recognition was important for Sarah as the portrait was a gentle collaboration with her autistic daughter.

As well as photographing Sarah, and in keeping with the collaborative process of @sisters_seen, it was my absolute pleasure to be photographed by her. You can see the resulting portrait @shoganphoto
Thank you Sarah for 'seeing' me. And thank you f22 for creating an intriguing and compelling project 📸⚡️
