The Professional Engagement Program (PEP): Fostering Dialogue, Learning, and Transformation

The Professional Engagement Program (PEP) is a dynamic platform designed to promote deep academic engagement, cross-cultural dialogue, and experiential learning between Senegalese institutions and U.S.-based scholars. At the heart of the 2025 edition is a powerful thematic focus on “Decolonizing Knowledge: African Futures, Global Perspectives”—a call to reimagine the production and circulation of knowledge from the African continent, centering African voices, experiences, and intellectual traditions.

This year, the program is honored to welcome 15 professors from leading U.S. universities. These scholars represent a wide range of disciplines including African Studies, History, Political Science, Literature, Public Health, Economics, Anthropology, Education, and the Arts. Their collective expertise and academic leadership make this a truly interdisciplinary and transformative gathering.

PEP not only strengthens bilateral academic exchange but also underscores the importance of shared knowledge production rooted in mutual respect, critical inquiry, and long-term partnerships.

🇸🇳🤝🏾🇺🇸 Dans le cadre du programme SIT x Iowa, nous avons eu l’honneur de participer hier à la cérémonie Miss Mathématiques et Sciences organisée par le Ministère de l’Éducation nationale.

Aujourd’hui, nous avons été chaleureusement Moustapha Mamba Guirassy avec nos étudiant·e·s et leurs encadreurs Iowa State University.

Nous saluons la clairvoyance du ministre et de son équipe, et espérons renforcer cette SIT Study AbroadionSIT Study Abroad Senegal: Hip-hop, African Diaspora and Decolonial Futures et l’État du Sénégal — à travers le ministère de l’Éducation et tous les autres autorités - ministères intéressés par nos actions.

Sports Globalization: NBA Africa and Journalism | SIT x UMD

The School for International Training’s Summer Program, in collaboration with the University of Maryland, has provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore the intersection of sports and journalism in Africa. During the first three days, participants had the privilege of engaging with notable figures like Joe Lopez, the president of the SEED Project, as well as Mactar Ndiaye and Sylla Sylla. These experts shared their inspiring journeys and emphasized the importance of giving back to their communities through sports.

The visit to the SEED Project in Thiès and the NBA Academy in Saly/Mbour was particularly impactful. Students recorded and reported on the experiences, lives, and dreams of the players, gaining firsthand insight into the transformative power of sports.

The SEED Project and NBA Africa represent a significant opportunity for African talent. This initiative underscores the belief that Africa is not just the future, but that the future of sports is already unfolding on the continent.

What an enriching day of meetings, and lectures with the group of students from @merrillcollege @univofmaryland x @sitstudyabroad

We had great conversations about SPORTS x BASKETBALL and JOURNALISM. During our discussions, we talked about women in sports, community service, and job opportunities. We were fortunate to meet with people like Joe Lopez, the President of Seed Project, as well as @mactarndiaye and @theladyhoop.

Thank you all for your time and the efforts you dedicate to changing people’s lives (boys and girls, men and women).

I visited the SEED Academy in Thiès today as part of the University of Maryland’s Sport Globalization, NBA Africa, and Journalism program in partnership with SIT, which I coordinate.

It has now been more than seven months that we have been working on the project with unwavering support from @mactarndiaye .

We plan to visit SEED with a group of students from the University of Maryland to better understand the project and SEED’s vision.

We are exploring a partnership between SIT, the University of Maryland, SEED.

I was pleased to meet with Galo, Founder of SEED, and the President of the @thebal #BAL4.

WISCONSIN SCHOOL BUSINESS | WITH School for International Training

Was a great pleasure to work with the
@wisconsinschoolofbusiness of @universityofwisconsin_madison JANUARY 8 - 18, 2024.

With professor Katie Krueger you brought a group of students in Senegal to learn about an African experience of Culture, Society and Business.

In one week, we were able to share with students the experiences and perspectives about African Business/ Society / Community / Relation by meeting with institutions, organizations and entrepreneurs and local communities.

We were pleased to visit @adepme_ and engaged with General Secretary Mbaye Jean-marie DIOUF about the impacts of there Institution in the country, Region, regarding the work opportunities, employment, Training, and Entrepreneurial activities etc. We questionned the role @adepme_ as partner in a country where many people are interested in creating there own company, business.

From Books, Academic Theories to EXPERIENCIAL LEARNING. Always trying to engage with people who are in action.

University's Department of History offered two Study Abroad courses: Paris/Auschwitz: Holocaust Memory and Leadership in Social Justice and History and Culture of West Africa.
Join professors Annette Finley-Croswhite and Elizabeth Fretwell and their Study Abroad students as they discuss what they learned on these amazing and often difficult journeys.
