In the school playground, Bart Simpson has Milhouse tied securely to a metal merry-go-round with a thick rope. When Milhouse nervously admits he is worried about how fast it might spin, Bart feigns concern before abruptly turning and frantically screaming at Otto in the school bus to hit the gas. Otto floors the accelerator, rapidly pulling the tow rope and spinning the roundabout at blistering, supersonic speeds. The violent centrifugal force distorts Milhouse’s face as he screams in terror until the entire spinning platform snaps off its mount, takes flight like an airborne saucer, and lands on edge, rolling violently across the schoolyard like an oversized wheel.
Meanwhile, in front of Springfield Elementary School, Superintendent Chalmers and Principal Skinner are giving a tour to a contingent of elderly World War II veterans. Chalmers proudly remarks that his worries about the visit were unfounded, only for the runaway carousel to crash into the schoolyard flagpole, toppling it toward the grass. Instinct immediately takes over for the veterans, who sprint over and hoist the flagpole back upright in an unmistakable recreation of the iconic Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
Before they can savor the moment, the ricocheting merry-go-round plows straight into the squad, knocking down the flag and scattering the veterans across the lawn. The apparatus finally wobbles and settles flat on the ground as the ropes untangle from Milhouse. Deeply nauseous and dizzy from the ride, Milhouse stumbles to his feet and promptly vomits directly across the fallen American flag, leaving the surviving soldier standing over him in utter horror.
