Applications are open for our three-year MFA in Art with a Glass emphasis. Deadline: February 15, 2027. For more than twenty years, every MFA student in Glass, international and domestic, has held a tuition-waived assistantship with a monthly stipend for all three years. That funding buys time: three years to experiment, broaden your perspective, and find your own direction as an artist. Work shown, all by MFA graduates: Eriko Kobayashi @eriko_glass, Kit Paulson @kitpaulson, Sadhbh Mowlds @sadhbh.mowlds, Kate Rutecki @katherine_rutecki_, Hoseok Youn @hoseok_youn, Nancy Qin Yu @nc_qin Want the full program guide? Kit Paulson @kitpaulson spent time with us at the SIU Glass. She gave an artist talk and a flameworking demo. The students got a lot out of seeing her process up close. Thank you, Kit. by @siuglass

We’re glad to welcome Dr. Caroline Madden as our Fall 2026 Artist-in-Residence. Caroline lectures in the School of Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin — a school SIU has had a student exchange agreement with for years. Before returning to Ireland she spent fourteen years as Head of 3D Studios — Glass, Ceramics and Sculpture — at Jacksonville University, where she co-founded the Glass Institute of the Southeast. She has taught at Pilchuck, UrbanGlass, and Pittsburgh Glass Center, and served on the board of the Glass Art Society. Her work is in the collections of the National Museum of Ireland and the Ulster Museum, Belfast, with permanent installations in Florida and at Lough Boora Parklands in Ireland. Much of her recent energy has gone into curatorial and organizational work — Engaging with Glass at the Solstice Arts Centre, and the Ireland Glass Biennale through NCAD’s ISGNE partnership. She’ll be with us through the fall. More on her work and time in the studio soon. by @siuglass

Highlighting two SIU Glass MFA alumni building international careers—Alex Trommler in Germany and Hyunsung Cho in South Korea. Hyunsung Cho @hyunsung_cho_glass was born and raised in Korea and earned his MFA in glass from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2010. He went on to work as a resident artist at the Creative Glass Center of America at WheatonArts in New Jersey and later served as Associate Artistic Director at the Glass Island Museum in Korea. His work has been featured in numerous international group exhibitions. Cho’s practice focuses on reinterpreting historical decorative glass traditions into functional forms, including goblets and Veronese-inspired vessels. He currently runs his own studio and works as a full-time artist in South Korea.___________________________ ______________________________________________ Alex Trommler @at_trom is a project manager at Mayer of Munich in Germany, where he has been based since 2018 after working in Chicago following his MFA from SIU in 2012. At this historic studio, he works between internationally recognized artists and skilled artisans, helping translate artistic concepts into large-scale architectural glass and mosaic works. The studio collaborates with artists such as Vik Muniz, Kiki Smith, Nick Cave, and Ann Hamilton on projects across Europe and North America. Trommler draws on his background in glass—beginning in Philadelphia, continuing through Alfred University, and culminating in his MFA at SIU—to guide material decisions and technical solutions. Alongside his professional role, he maintains an independent studio practice exploring sculptural works that combine glass, metal, and fabricated elements. by @siuglass
Sunday during Spring Break with the glass team, firing up the new Mini Dragon furnace from @mobileglassblowingstudios for its first melt. We also played a game called “Magic Stick”, a glassblowing challenge where the only tool allowed is one randomly chosen object that isn’t a glassblowing tool. A fun test firing and a great way to get the team together on the weekend. We’ll definitely be doing more of this soon. @soadsiu by @siuglass
Throwback Alumni Series | MFA Spotlight 🔥 This week we’re highlighting two MFA alumni who have expanded their creative practices into toolmaking alongside their glass work. Brandon Smith, MFA 2016 (@bsmithglass), received his BFA from Tyler School of Art and his MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he was awarded a Windgate Research Grant and received two published Niche Awards. While at SIU, he deepened his hot sculpting practice and discovered a passion for blacksmithing—an exploration supported by collaboration with our metalsmithing program @sims.siu This ultimately led to the founding of his tool brand, Crow Print Tools @crow.print.tools He is currently building a new glass program at Keystone College while continuing to exhibit and sell both glass and tools internationally. Tim Spurchise, MFA 2020 (@tspurchise), earned his MFA in Glass from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. During graduate study, he expanded his technical skills through blacksmithing—again benefiting from the cross-disciplinary support of our metalsmithing area, @sims.siu —which led to the development of his own glass toolmaking business. He now designs and produces high-quality, handcrafted tools for glass artists. by @siuglass
