‘Routine as Repertoire’ by @siwesa | @objectifscentre Hi everyone, this is Emmeline Yong @emmeyong, Co-founder and Director of @objectifscentre, a photography and film centre in Singapore that aims to cultivate original voices in visual storytelling, and to inspire and broaden perspectives through the power of images. This week, I’m taking over the @womenphotograph account to spotlight projects by some women photographers that Objectifs has worked with over the years. Sit Weng San @siwesa is an artist and educator who works with still and moving images. She is based between Singapore and Los Angeles. ‘Routine as Repertoire’, uses photography and videos to explore routines that women incorporate into our lives as our bodies go through transformation or challenges, visible or not. Through the project, Weng San hopes that experiences such as illnesses, disabilities, aging, motherhood, and gender transitioning can be viewed beyond the tragic or heroic polarities, and the experiences may exist and be represented in all their complexities. [작가 소개] 최민경×싯왱산 @chemimis @siwesa 최민경은 서울을 기반으로 영상, 설치, 협업 프로젝트를 넘나들며 작업하는 시각예술가이다. 자신의 몸과 경험을 매개로, 변화하는 사회문화 속 여성의 욕망과 딜레마의 복합성을 탐구한다. 싯왱산은 현재 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 싱가포르 출신의 예술가이자 교육자이다. 사진과 영상을 중심으로 작업하며, 주변화된 몸의 단순화된 재현과 그들의 다층적인 정체성 사이의 간극을 만드는 사회 시스템에 주목하고 개입한다. [작품 소개] 영원한 젊음을 위한 매뉴얼 <영원한 젊음을 위한 매뉴얼>은 서울 을지로와 싱가폴 부킷브라운을 주요 배경으로, “영원한 젊음”을 성취하기 위한 허구의 매뉴얼이 몸과 도시에 적용되는 양상을 그려낸 풍자극이다. 이 작품은 “지우라, 통제하라, 식민화하라, 위장하라”의 4단계 지침으로 구성된 매뉴얼의 목소리를 따라 전개되며, 두 작가의 체화된 경험 (민경의 ‘매끄러움’에 대한 집착과 혐오, 산의 자궁암과 조기 폐경 경험)을 비롯해 웰니스-안티에이징-바이오해킹 산업, 그리고 급격한 경제 성장을 이룬 탈식민 도시의 재개발과 첨단 기술 프로젝트를 연결한다. 절대적 권위를 지닌 듯 보이던 매뉴얼은 과거의 소멸에 저항하는 개인들 (생태학자, 장인, 활동가), 그리고 작가 자신들의 성찰에 부딪히며 모순이 드러나고 결국 붕괴에 이른다. [리뷰] 두 여성이 젊음을 쫓는다. 우리가 사는 도시 또한 젊음을 쫓는다. 우리는 이들을 따라 '젊음'이라는 매끄러운 세계가 작동하기 위해 사라진 것들과 곧 사라져갈 여러 사례들을 만난다. 매끄러움은 한시도 쉬지 않고 상상조차 힘든 다양한 방법으로 우리를 포섭한다. 심지어 '젊고 건강한 타인의 피'를 동원해서라도. Filmed in China, Mexico and the United States and utilizing archival footage, @siwesa’s “Searching for Liang Zhu” journeys into spaces that are echoing with the story of the Butterfly Lovers; a Chinese legend about a woman named Zhu Ying-tai who dressed as a man in order to have an education. The story is embodied and conveyed in a repertoire of gestures, spoken word, dance and other performances by individuals in the ‘imagined community’ who are often represented to be homogeneous. As the legend of Liang Zhu is retold, the singular narrative is destabilized by differing ideologies and personal histories. Catch it tonight at 10:30pm, #onTV by @siwesa

Many of us have turned our attention to the political and societal upheaval in South Korea, especially while massive protests continue in Seoul. GYOPO’s final program of the year takes a look at the conditions of women living in South Korea and Singapore, with a critical analysis of the K-beauty industry and discussion on aging, Disability and urban space. Join Korean Seoul-based artist Minkyung Choi and Singaporean artist Weng San Sit in discussion with Elise Hu, author of FLAWLESS for a screening followed by presentations and a discussion on Saturday 12/14. At 1pm, we will host an optional screening of“A Manual for Timeless Youth (영원한 젊음을 위한 매뉴얼),” 2024, 50 min., which has been exhibited extensively in Korea. This is a special opportunity to experience “Timeless Youth,” a collaborative project by Minkyung Choi and Weng San Sit that investigates our individual & collective aspirations for “youth” and newness. It attempts to understand the ways in which the phenomena is echoed in all aspects of our lives; from identities to our bodies to urban spaces, and in social, cultural, scientific and virtual spheres. Focusing on the Korean and Singaporean societies, ”Timeless Youth” explores this pursuit for youth and modernity and its often contentious relationship with our history and memory. At 2pm, Minkyung Choi, Weng San Sit, and Elise Hu will present on their work and engage in a conversation. Hu’s FLAWLESS is a journalistic exploration of the present and future of beauty through the lens of South Korea’s booming “K-beauty” industry and the culture it promotes. Two years ago, I was hospitalized and was not able to finalize the video installation for our Seoul Exhibition. Finally, we are done! And will be showing at @objectifscentre (thank you for having us!) starting July 19th. I am about to board the plane back to Singapore and we will both be there for the opening and the artist talk on July 20th. Short but rejuvenating trip in nature after another intensive semester. Fortunate to have found two amazing campgrounds without prior bookings. Swum among fishes, woke up under a majestic tree's umbrella, saw snakes, foxes, elks, and plenty of birds and dodged numerous poison oak (I hope!). taken in Central Coast, California by @siwesa

Posted @withregram • @corinnebotz Weng San Sit’s @siwesa photographs are long exposures of the women doing their routines, with lights attached to their bodies or assistance technologies. This references Frank Gilbreth’s early photography where he tracks worker’s efficiency by attaching lights to their hands. ‘Routines’ retake Gilbreth’s images and a woman’s self-care is shown to be labor in resistance and resilience.
