Solo CQB is scary and it sucks- when you start to think of how much you give up and how much risk you simply cannot mitigate no matter what you do, it becomes evident that it should truly only ever be an option of last resort.
That said, it can suck a lot less if you know what you’re doing and can apply the fundamentals of CQB to the best of your ability should you have to on the worst day of your life. But that level of performance won’t happen if you never train it under the guidance of solid, vetted and knowledgeable instructors who want to see you succeed.

Don’t miss our next CQB workshop on Wednesday, May 22 at FreeState gun range in Middle River, MD.

There is a saying I often think of, and it is a good one-
“Beware the man with just one gun”
What is the significance of this old adage?
The belief behind it is that a man with an arsenal is one who likely is not a master of any single one of his guns, whereas a man with one gun is likely a master of that firearm. Before you go off and build yourself an arsenal and buy every cool new tool under the sun, ask yourself if you truly have a mastery of what you already have? The Glock 19 pictured above has been with me since 2016. I’ve lost count of how many rounds it has through it but my ballpark is around 10-12k with a lot of those rounds having been fired in the last 5 years. The ADM has been with me less time than that (2 years) but is my second of only two rifles I own, with its round count being around 5k and the rifle before (an LWRC) being around 10k. I say all of this to say that your investment should be in a select few solid and dependable firearms, not a new gun or two every other month- and after that initial investment you should be training with them to the point that you KNOW you are a master of them. Once there, the world is your oyster. Buy the fun ones, go bonkers. But ensure that you prioritize what matters first. Be a master of one, not a master of none. by @sixeight.mmac

Throttle control: a buzzphrase with great significance- let’s talk about it.

We all know that when it comes to getting your gun into a fight, fast is good.
Fast draw, fast presentation, fast sight acquisition, fast follow up shots, fast victories. Fast is good…
But not for everything.
What good is being lightning fast on the draw and presentation if we miss? You could have a sub one second draw to first shot, but if that shots not a HIT… you’ll come out in second place in the fight, and that is simply not acceptable. Enter throttle control, the art of knowing when it is appropriate to go fast, and when to slow down.
For example: getting a gun out of a holster is almost always a movement that needs to be FAST. A firearm is a tool of last resort and as such it is *most likely* to be introduced when immediately needed and not usually before. What SHOULD’NT be rushed, is your sight and picture alignment, and your trigger press. Those two should be done as quickly as you’re capable of doing while still ensuring a hit is made. Not everything required blazing speed. Throttle control is a simple but critical tool in any well rounded shooters tool kit, and is a skill that any defensive shooter should master. Good use of this skill allows a competent shooter to be able to draw quickly and STILL get good shots on target in a timely manner, regardless of distance and complexity (see above drill- Draw, one round, transition, one round, on C Zone steel at about 30 to 35 yards)
Something to consider.
