“And one by one dropped the revelers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.“
- Edgar Allen Poe, “The Masque of the Red Death”

it weighs upon me that I have not been inspired to post nor able to connect with many of you these past several months. This is an unimaginably horrific chapter in our lives that I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. My heart goes out to everyone who is struggling to find safety in their day-to-day lives and some respite from a hypervigilant body. by @sixties_chic

determined to champion this coffee table book, “Unusual Sounds,” for pandering to my unshakeable love affair with vintage library music: evocative, ambient scores written and recorded with the intention of being licensed for use in film, television or radio.
When someone less-entrenched in the cinema of yore discovers that I spend generous stretches of time listening to “library music,” I am never sure whether it elicits musings over the KPM and Conroy libaries, De Wolfe Music and Roger Webb, or if their mind conjures up the sort of confounding monotony that gets classified as “elevator music” except this time - for whatever impetuous reason - it’s in a library.
In truth these songs have surprising efficacy in sharpening the senses and becoming, like all good novels or films or pieces of music, a new lens through which to experience waking life. When you are plunged headlong into the sumptuous realm of library music, you wind up with an awful lot of questions that can seldom be answered unless you already know what you are looking for, - and lots and lots of, “I wonder if this track was used in anything?” It is hence delightful to behold exhaustive interviews within this compendium, not to mention album covers, film posters and geographically organized (British, German, French, Italian and North American) accounts on the commissioning, categorization and licensing of library music. I have many hours yet to spend poring over it, and the serendipitous tendency of this musical universe to be solely instrumental with the odd textural use of vocals means I can continue to sate my ears as I read. 🧡:)

Almost exactly a year ago, I saw “O Lucky Man!” (1973, dir. by Lindsay Anderson, conceived by Malcolm McDowell), a film about a young coffee salesman who perseveres through one injustice after another with desperate and counterintuitive optimism. Periodically, the story is intercepted by scenes of musicians jamming, marshalled by Alan Price on keyboard. Price’s compositions, evocative of an Ancient Greek Chorus, remark on the protagonist’s journey with sarcasm and great lyrical perspicacity. Anderson’s and McDowell’s exasperations with the capitalist - and highly paradoxical- work ethics of British society were somewhat lost on me at the time, but I was absolutely enchanted by Alan Price. Although I grew up with The Animals along with other British rhythm and blues groups of the early 1960’s, Alan’s solo work had never reached my scope of awareness until now. I devoured the “O Lucky Man!” soundtrack, his television performances, his recordings with The Alan Price Set, and somehow watched “Alfie Darling” several times (now an unusually problematic comfort film). Yesterday, the nineteenth of April, he turned eighty-one, and as his voice has grown so close to my heart this past year, stoking my hours at the piano with decadence, I cannot pass up the opportunity to honour him here.♥️

The neighbourhood moms really loved this outfit for some reason and I intensely recommend that you build yourself a wooden dressing screen and find some exciting ‘70s wallpaper with which to cover it
