97% of domestic violence survivors say keeping their pets with them is a key factor in deciding whether or not to seek shelter.

No survivor should ever have to choose between their safety and their pets. Animals are family and support for many victims, and ensuring survivors can access safe shelter with them is essential to breaking barriers to safety. by @sj.action

Asking survivors “Why didn’t you just leave?” is the wrong question ✋ Survivors stay for many reasons: fear, financial control, threats, emotional manipulation, or concern for their kids. Leaving is NOT easy and exiting the relationship is most unsafe time for a victim.

Let’s be clear: Financial abuse IS domestic violence. Financial abuse is rooted in one partner trying to have power and control over the other.

While financial abuse can sometimes be harder to recognize, understanding the many forms of domestic violence and financial abuse can provide a lifeline for victims and survivors to reach safety. by @sj.action

⏱️ Every minute, about 24 people in the U.S. experience physical violence, rape, or stalking by an intimate partner.

That’s a number we can’t accept, it’s a reminder that domestic violence is happening everywhere, every day and together we can end it. We must do more to listen to survivors and create resources and pathways to safety for them and their families. by @sj.action

While there is unfortunately no way to completely eliminate the risk of image-based sexual abuse, there are some precautions you can take to reduce your vulnerability.

Here are some security steps you can take:

• Try to make it a habit to lock and/or log off devices when not in use.
• Regular monitoring of your account and network activity can help you spot unauthorized access or anomalies.
• Select the strongest security settings on all your devices; use strong, unique passwords; and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).
• If you experience image abuse, the recent “Take It Down” Act is designed to help you get these images removed. by @sj.action

If you think your friend or family member is being abused, be supportive by listening and validating.

Survivors know their experience better than anyone. Taking a survivor-centered approach empowers survivors by prioritizing their needs and wants. We should never tell them what to do, instead we should offer to help in the ways that they need most. by @sj.action
