An intense day with @eda_drinksandwinecampus at the glamorous @forbeshousemadrid, discussing building Spanish fine wines in export. The evening was about catching up with friends - and a discovery. @vinoycompania has been in existence for 16 years and I’ve only just discovered it! No 5 in the delightfully restored and replanted Plaza de Olavide and run by @andres.gonzalez.sellares. He runs a wine shop that’s a treasure hunter’s paradise. My choice on an evening where the day temperatures hit 34c was Amandete. 11.5% a blend of garnacha tintorera, palomino and treixadura, cool, delicate, a trace of tannin and sour cherry. A fleeting pleasure as the wine - dating from the days of Vina Mein and Comando G - was only made in two vintages. If you haven’t been, visit this shop, with its regular wine tastings. Great to meet you Andres. I’ll be back!

Where am I? First clue: I am drinking the rather wonderful Chateau Sudiraut Vieilles Vignes 2021, and La Rioja Alta 904 2011 out of ISO glasses rather than something larger. Second clue: there are plastic food containers in the picture. Not dejeuner sur l’herbe but close. More a 🇬🇧 picnic The third clue is the glorious garden beyond.
Answer: we are at Glyndebourne to see the excellent Billy Budd, Benjamin Britten’s tragic opera. A great performance. But Glyndebourne is also all about dressing up in black tie (men) and people and picnic spotting, and envying the gardens in a time of drought.
These two lovely wines definitely made the evening (even in the glassware survivors from my WSET diploma studies some time ago)

Barrafina in Borough Yards was buzzing last night with the pop-up from Michelin* chef @edusalanova of the remarkable historic hotel and former station @hotelcanfrancestacion. A riot of delicious dishes including a glorious beetroot salmorejo (recalling the days when Spain exported beetroot to France via the little Pyrenean village of Canfranc. Dish followed dish each with exquisite saucing. Lobster, rice, fish, pré-salé lamb and a reconstructed pumpkin desert. Lifted off by Gin Mare martinis followed by chilled Herència Altés. And when the last plate was dished up - we burst into Noisy applause.
All proceeds @esmentcomunidad, a Mallorca charity supporting people with learning disabilities.

The best photos are the impromptu ones. This is a perfect example. I was with tiptop photographer @abelvaldenebro and a glass of Oloroso Sherry in the González Byass cellar in Jerez. Who should appear but @floresyvinos? Smiles all round! Abel caught us at the right moment. Note the important key in Antonio's left hand. It opens the door to a collection of treasures, including the wines sold at the recent auction at Christie's. I was in Jerez to taste the wines in his Masterclass @Vinoble. The cellar also has a vertical of the Palmas series, which I 'helped' Antonio select in 2013. The moment the bomb dropped on Nagasaki - a rare surviving clock frozen in time 11:02, 9 August 1945. The first exhibit at the memorial museum: a powerful, unflinching exhibition.

Even the drains are charming

Some 70,000 people died by the end of 1945. By 9August 2025 the number of victims had risen to 201, 942.

A new face of Nagasaki: the Prefecture Museum. Inside - an unexpected collection of Spanish painting. Plus a glorious collection of porcelain underglazed in cobalt blue by Yuzon Nakazato.

Proud moment for 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: @joseppituroca selected an English wine in the tasting to launch the Island Wine Summit in Tenerife 🔝💯🍾 It was none other than @sugruesouthdowns Pinot Noir. Not from the South Downs but from England’s hottest (probably literally as well as oenologically) wine region, Essex’s Crouch Valley. #tenerifeislagastronómica #iws26 @madridfusion by @sjevansmw
