My story…

I grew up in South Philly. I used to get jumped by the white boys on 2nd St., and the Black kids on 5th and 7th St. all the time. I literally remember taking longer routes home just to avoid being seen.

I got so tired of getting jumped that I decided to join a gang — TRG.

I wanted a sense of protection. I felt alone, and honestly, I just wanted to fit in. I remember finally feeling happy because I had “friends” — people I believed would be there for me.

It only took me getting shot at once, held up at gunpoint twice, jumped by our rival gang three times, and locked up four times for me to finally get my act together and realize this wasn’t the life for me.

But what people don’t know is what ultimately set me straight.

It was the murder of the person who got me into the gang — K9. RIP.

Fast forward 20 years…

I’m not where I want to be, but I’m a hell of a lot closer.

I have true friends who genuinely care about me. A good job. Great business partners. I’ve traveled the world. I’ve made great investments. & accomplished a lot of my own personal dreams that were once so far out of reach.

And the crazy part?

We haven’t even scratched the surface yet.

The main takeaway from this isn’t, “Look, I’m better than you.”

It’s more like:

Look, I’m just a knucklehead from South Philly who honestly probably would have been dead by now if I never turned my life around.

Where you started doesn’t matter to me.

I don’t care about that.

Tell me where you’re headed. taken in South Philadelphia by @sjfrancisx
