It's been a while since I baked anything. But put the metaphorical apron on and got involved - finally - with banana bread. These little beauties (with added pecan nuts) were baked using a recipe from a good friend - Gloria - who lives in Ventura. They're gorgeous. Although Flynn - my in-house critic - reckons they'd be even better with some dark chocolate chips.

Next time Flynn. Next time.

As portmanteaus go, "swavoury" is a bit rubbish. And to be honest - I'm not sure these things are much better. Jury very much out at the Half Time Cake Club. A number of people liked them enough to want more. Others - including me - thought they were a bit, well, mid (as I think Da Kidz say).

Not a patch on proper Chocolate Brownies. You could easily add the Chipotle flakes and pretzels to them I guess. But I'm not sure it would actually make them any better.

Think I'll give swavoury a swerve next time.

Gardening in the rain. Stopped for a mug of Barry's. And a slice of...... Christmas cake. Must be five months since it was baked. Absolutely gorgeous.

Chocolate cookies. Made with olive oil. Not sure why they didn't go flatter in the bake. They were fine. Not as moist as I'd hoped. More milk needed? Oil? No idea. I'm not actually a baker. But you knew that already.

Nigella's Guinness & Chocolate cake. Sort of. This spent 30 minutes in the oven. La Lawson says 45 minutes. That's a huge difference. And I'm not a massive fan of her white frosting - meant to be the head on a pint of Guinness but I think it's a bit gloopy. So chocolate frosting on this one.

All works. Happy enough. But it's fair to say that she knows best.

Chasing the unicorn. My first ever Victoria Sponge was - by complete chance - a belter. Trying to recreate that cake has proved to be impossible. So far at least. But this one wasn't too far away.

Made as a birthday cake. No candles. But a lot of love. Happy birthday Flynn x

"Simple Whole Orange Cake". They're not kidding. Four Clementines. Everything bar the pips. And bizarrely -- no butter or oil. Oranges, sugar, almond flour. That's it. And this isn't a filtered shot. It really is as bright as this photo shows. Tastes good too. Sorry @thisdamnationfilm !

A couple of Coffee & Walnuts. "Why two?" you ask. There have been a number of cakes that have gone to the football and I'd thought afterwards "Dang - I'd should have made two"

So here we are. Of course there is a chance that I've cocked it up and one bite of the first one consigns the second one straight to the bin. And if you know this account then you also know that I'm more than capable of baking a total dog's dinner.

But let's hope not. It's Burnley. Stamford Bridge seems to be a happy place at the moment. And this one is a request from my good mate @steweystew The Lower West Half Time Cake Club marches on.

When Cakes Go Wrong.

I mean. Ffs!

All this needs is a Stephen Fry voice over asking whether it's a brick or a cake?

Well it certainly isn't a brick. And - having tried a slice - I can tell you it's really not a cake either. In tasted as bad as it looks. Possibly worse.

Meant to be a Coffee Drizzle. In fact it was an Abject Failure.

No idea what went wrong.

Disappointing for me. And for the Lower West Half Time Cake Club.

So this is Christmas....cake. Always difficult to pass judgement on your own cake. But I'm very happy with this one. It weighs a ton and contains A Lot of sherry. Some mad American recipe that includes cranberries (of course) cocoa (bit odd). Anyway - it works. And that's all you can ask for.
