Read this on holidays and then realised I needed to switch up my genres a bit after the weight of this one.

I hadn’t heard about Stoner until some of my male friends recommended it - a book that follows a simple man, living a simple life, written by a man.

Following William Stoner as he left behind his family farm in the 1920’s to pursue a career in Academia. A wife he fell out of love with and stayed with, an only child that he never connected with and his conscious experience of the decline of his health, Stoner holds this weight on you while you read to wonder about the futility of everyday lives.

I do think it’s a literary feat to succinctly follow a single life with not many external characters in such an introspective way. The writing was beautiful and I can see why it has so much acclaim.

A creative writing academic becomes infatuated with a professor that he fondly calls the poet throughout the book, his complications in his own relationship come to a head as his partner has everything he wants and needs to have but the poet gives him everything he wants and needs to feel.

Didn’t know this was the authors debut. Although it was only around 200 pages it was gripping and left lots of room for my imagination when it finished. by @sjgreads

Max depresso…. My first Baldwin loved up to the expectations I had, I felt like he achieved more in paragraphs than whole books do.

Loved the setting of American expatriates in Paris and the angst of a passionate love affair. A great story of someone who actually died for love. No summary can do it justice.

“And this was perhaps the first time in my life that death occurred to me as a reality. I thought of the people before me who had looked down at the river and gone to sleep beneath it. I wondered about them. I wondered how they had done it - it, the physical act. I had thought of suicide when / was much younger, as, possibly, we all have, but then it would have been for revenge, it would have been my way of informing the world how awfully it had made me suffer. But the silence of the evening, as / wandered home, had nothing to do with that storm, that far-off boy. I simply wondered about the dead because their days had ended and I did not know how I would get through mine.” by @sjgreads

Beautiful collection of essays of women who have visited the Kenwood Women’s bath. I have wanted to go for years and got to go with my sister which was extra special.

My favourite book this year so far - love, loss and longing for the ocean.

A book on friendship, Marissa is now a journalist writing from New York City as it braces for a hurricane, she recounts her time growing up on the island with her best friend Arielle before they experienced the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004.

A short book but the imagery of the reef and the manta rays was enchanting. I loved it and felt like I could imagine the girls diving after school as they became as thick as sisters. by @sjgreads
