Taking my good boy's new wheels for a spin! πŸ›’ Baxter's mobility and energy have been hitting new lows, so I got us a little Bear Wagon for my birthday so he can go as far as he likes without worrying about getting home again. He felt pretty tired and defeated (and was covered in mosquitoes bc he's an easy target) when I picked him up and put him in, but once we started moving, he was totally down for the ride. (Swipe for video! πŸŽ₯) Looking forward to being able to bring him to streets and places again so he can smell all the smells that are smelly πŸ₯°

I cried so much over this piece; it ripped out my heart to write it and relive the memories and the loss. But ultimately, I'm so incredibly proud to memorialize the perfect love of my life in this essay for @rei and introduce to the world my sweet gargoyling princess pig. This is the story of me and Baxter, and how he taught me how to walk, run, hike, and love as he carried me through 15 years of life and I returned the favor when his body began to fail. And I hope this can help encourage people to adopt and foster, and ultimately, live a good life with a good shelter dog.

Thank you to the incredible editing team at #uncommonpath @ REI for this space and wonderful editing. πŸ™ Big #shoutout to @daisynavin for the hopeful ending to this story and the @lifeline_foster team for their support along the way, too. Big ups to @fultonanimalservices @dekalbanimals @bosleys.place @lifelineanimal (linked in the story) and @rvm.ga, too. Thank you for your love and care for dogs!!

Many people share this kind of news "with heavy heart," but I can't. Mine is shattered in a million, tiny glassine pieces that are cutting my veins into shreds right now. It was this morning that I was forced to say goodbye to my precious, exceptional, adorable, loving, and immensely tolerant little baby boo, my beloved Lt. Baxter Bear. Ends up his bronchitis wasn't bronchitis at all, but pulmonary fibrosis, for which there is no cure. Even with an oxygen tank, he had only days, and would slowly suffocate to death. I was devastated to have been left with no choice.

To the very end, he lived up to the title I gave him back when he was a 26 lb nothing with ears, tail, and paws too big for his spindly starved body. He was a soldier, a trooper, a fighter. Allergies and itchy feet? He learned to wear shoesies and took his weekly shots like a champ. Arthritis and weakened hindquarters? He learned to let me carry him up and down the stairs every day (after he got over his independence and pride). Incontinent? Not my boy - he held his pee from 630 PM last night until he passed at 11 AM through sheer force of will.

He was the most AMAZING doggy to have ever existed, a pure soul of love whose sad face and furrowed worry brow no one could help but smile at. And I will always, always love him like I have never loved anything or anyone before. My bear was the love of my life. Thank you, my little buddy, for hanging on so long and loving me for over 15 years. You stay there and be good boys ... My little favorite friend. Like I've always said, I will always come back for you, so I'll see you soon, snugglebunny. πŸ’” I love you, angelface. by @sjlin

Modena photo dump 2️⃣! Short tour through the medieval city center (peep Pavarotti there!) and its historic attractions and lovely architecture, a visit to the largest-volume genuine @acetobalsamicomodena acetaia in Modena, a cooking class, twilight wanderings (where I got Pretty Womaned by a very mean luxury vintage shop owner πŸ˜†), a spectacular dinner featuring dishes made with balsamic vinegar (ofc!) with members of the @balsamicotradizionale @acetobalsamicodimodenausa consortium, lunch indicative of the region, and my "little treat," since apparently, I can't leave Milan without one for the sake of the deal! 🫠 taken in Modena, Italy by @sjlin

Modena, Italy photo dump part 1! The first two days, during which my new friends and I, escorted generously by @alexandra_in_rome of @stuntmanpr for @balsamicotradizionale @acetobalsamicomodena
about Lambrusco, received a whirlwind 101 overview of the two types of #authenticbalsamicvinegar (and their subcategories) at a 5th generation woman-owned acetaia, ate at an Italian market, and drank Lambrusco all about town. taken in Modena, Italy by @sjlin

One of the hardest things I have to do as the @resy Atlanta #resyhitlist writer is confining my recs to just one paragraph that needs to succinctly capture the vibe and food, both, and a tip or two. Anyone that's ever met me can surmise within seconds, brevity is not my thing, especially if I'm talking about food! But that's why I love contributing to the #resystaffpicks roundup - I get to go on about why a dish or place is living rent-free in my head ... And then when it's published, I get to see what my colleagues are obsessing over. Fun!

This month, my shout-outs are to @charmthaiatlanta, @kimballhouse, and @cafe_alsace, but I fully agree w/ my buddy @mikejordanatl on his picks, @pinklotusthai and @so.fox.atl, and included bonus pix of my own recent visits at the end.

Still haven't quite caught my breath from the surreal, emotional, full-circle whirlwind trip to New Orleans this long weekend.

For those who don't know, I got my start in food writing in New Orleans, a freelance gig with @whereyatnola shortly after I graduated @tulaneu. My first "big break" was when I pitched a dessert guide to the magazine, which became my first cover story ... For which the front page image was of the @commanderspalace iconic creme brulee. It was there that I had my first fine dining media tasting, because they took a gamble on some know-nothing 20-something upstart. Not too long after, they kindly invited me to the opening of Adelaide, where I met Ti Martin, who was already a legend even then. I never forgot the respect with which she treated me, a starstruck nobody with big dreams, and the dessert tasting that put me on the path of achieving them.

So it was with so many big feelings that I closed this loop 20 years later as I attended the most recent #megandco dinner at Commander's with the impressive @lisamariedonovan as Ti's guests as @megbickford teamed up with North America's #1 pastry chef @eunji.leeee for a 7-course dessert dinner. I finally got to thank Ti for the opportunities she gave me when I was starting out, her willingness to talk to me those early days. I sat next to critic @ianmcnultynola, whose reviews I read as homework to train myself in vernacular, and across from @ejlagasse, of whom mutual friends had already assured me is absolutely the prodigy the culinary world says he is. My most profound thanks goes to Annie Condodina at @xbecca and @visitneworleans for this momentous homecoming.

And the biggest feeling of all, is yes -- I still know what it means to miss New Orleans. Because who I am now was born in the rain by the Pontchartrain ... And no amount of water can wash away my love for New Orleans. taken in Commander's Palace by @sjlin

Immigrant restaurant stories are rarely linear.

When it comes to international food in Atlanta, the history behind each restaurant is likely to be a long, twisting tale.

For some, like the first of our highlights in this month’s globe-trotting culinary voyage, it takes some time to land on our shores, and even more time to bring their Middle Eastern past to our city.

For others, it starts with sharing one simple Salvadoran dish, which then turns into a greater vision around serving the community.

And for our last feature, it’s about keeping the flow of cultural exchange open, finding more Japanese traditions to introduce to Atlanta in order to keep them preserved for all time.

Have you checked out any of these spots yet?

Read more about each restaurant at the link in our bio. 🌎🍜

Y'all must be tired of me going on and on about the "stupid tomato" at @beymediterranean, invariably my favorite dish of the entire summer. That's because a perfect tomato - it's rare in the US (for commercial agriculture reasons), special when it happens, and magical when it's consistent. Which led to ... How do you know when you've got a good 'un?? Because I've only had mind-blowing tomatoes two other times in my life (which I also wrote about in this explainer!), and one was fresh out of my mom's garden and the other, summer in southern Italy.

So I asked some pros how to pick a perfect tomato πŸ… for @thekitchn. Here's what farmers like those at @tuckerfarmsga, producers like @sunsetgrown, and of course, chef Marc at @beymediterranean how to nail the flawless fregetable.

I first met @rosaatl, owner of @elponceatl, when I came in to interview @claudvictoria for @southernlivingmag about @barana.atl for the smash hit dessert bar downstairs in the old El Bar. Claudia insisted I speak with Rosa, that she was part of her journey and that her advocacy for the Hispanic and Latino community in Atlanta made this Austrian-born woman truly of the people. So it's absolutely lovely that a year or so later, we get to showcase how she got there, what she's doing, and the exciting places she's going ... And how she's taking her people there with her.
