What happens when design moves beyond the screen? In SJSU's MDes Experience Design program, students investigate experiences across products, services, systems, environments, and emerging technologies. Through research, experimentation, prototyping, and critical inquiry, students explore how design can respond to changing human, social, and technological conditions. Recent MDes XD thesis work has explored areas including healthcare, climate resilience, inclusive XR, mobility, and collaborative design systems. Bring your interests. Expand your methods. Discover where your design practice can go next. Applications for Fall 2027 are open through February 1. Want to learn more? Join our November information session. Follow a week in the life of directors Morgan and Kate, two BFA Animation/Illustration students directing the Capstone film Defection! 👑 Defection is a 2D/3D Hybrid Animated Film. The story takes place in a digital, whimsical world controlled by an eccentric King who’s detached himself from reality. Mira, one of his followers, starts to see past his facade and has to decide whether to stay in his world or leave it to live her own life.  Every year, the SJSU Animation/Illustration program’s graduating seniors create different Capstone projects to display the storytelling and technical skills they’ve gained throughout their time in the program. They work as teams with the help of their faculty advisor to bring their visions to life throughout the course of 3 semesters. Defection will be premiering at the Hammer Theater alongside the rest of the Animation/Illustration Capstone projects in May of 2027.  Want to learn more about this film? Follow @defectionfilm on Instagram for updates as they move throughout production and beyond! On September 25, YBCA will open the exhibition “Rael San Fratello: Prototypes and Provocations,” which explores the work of the design studio founded by Virginia San Fratello and Ronald Rael. The studio operates at the intersection of poetics and utility, architecture and social practice. Encompassing more than two decades of work, this mid-career survey traces Rael San Fratello’s evolution from early experiments in wearable housing to a series of projects centered on the U.S.–Mexico border and beyond. One of the exhibition’s centerpieces is “The Workshop,” a large-scale commissioned structure made of 3D-printed, plant-holding tiles and a thatched roof. Combining traditional and state-of-the-art methods, the structure proposes ecologically sound building techniques while offering visitors a glimpse into the studio’s design process and setup. ✨ #SJSUDesign #YBCA https://ybca.org/yerba-buena-center-for-the-arts-announces-upcoming-season-of-exhibitions-and-programs-for-2026/ by @sjsudesign
