INSIDE THE FORMULA: CCT

You've probably never heard of Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride.

But if you've used a quality skincare product, there's a good chance you've experienced it.

Commonly derived from coconut or palm kernel fatty acids, CCT is a lightweight, stable emollient valued for its smooth, silky feel.

So why did we choose it for SKÄGG?

Because a beard oil shouldn't leave your beard feeling unnecessarily heavy or greasy.

CCT helps our formulation spread evenly, conditions without excessive weight and balances the richer botanical oils in our blend.

It's not the most glamorous ingredient on the label.

But it's one of the ingredients that helps make the whole formulation work.

Every ingredient needs a job.

Next: SQUALANE — and this one has a particularly interesting story.

INSIDE THE FORMULA: ARGAN OIL

Native to Morocco, argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree and has long been valued for its conditioning properties.

Naturally rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic and linoleic acid, alongside vitamin E compounds, it helps soften beard hair, improve manageability and support the skin's moisture barrier.

Why did we choose it?

Because it delivers effective conditioning while contributing to the balanced, non-greasy feel we're developing at SKÄGG.

Not because it's fashionable. Because it earns its place.

Every ingredient needs a job.

Next: CCT — an ingredient you might not recognise, but one that makes a real difference to how beard oil feels.

INSIDE THE FORMULA: JOJOBA OIL

Here's something you might not know.

Jojoba oil isn't technically an oil. It's a liquid wax.

Extracted from the seeds of a desert shrub native to North America, jojoba has a rather unusual composition.

Its wax esters share similarities with some of the natural lipids found in human sebum — the oily substance our skin produces.

So why did we choose it for SKÄGG LABS?

Because it brings something useful to the formula.

It helps condition beard hair, supports a softer feel, contributes to skin moisturisation and offers excellent resistance to oxidation.

And when you're developing a beard oil intended for everyday use, how a product feels matters just as much as what's inside it.

Every ingredient needs a job.

Jojoba earns its place.

Next in the series: ARGAN OIL.

Development complete doesn't mean job done.

Yesterday we marked a pretty significant milestone for SKÄGG LABS: the development of our first six beard oils is finished.

But there's a difference between developing a product and putting one on a shelf.

Now comes the less glamorous part.

Compliance. Packaging. Labelling. Production.

And all the small details that turn something we've developed into something we're comfortable putting the SKÄGG LABS name on.

Some of it probably won't make particularly exciting Instagram content.

It's still part of doing it properly.

So that's where we're heading next.

Six oils. Getting closer.

00 — Natural / Unscented
01 — Peppermint
02 — Sandalwood
03 — Coconut
04 — Vetiver
05 — Leather

Development: complete.

That's quite a satisfying sentence to write.

What started with an idea has become six finished versions of the first SKÄGG LABS beard oil collection.

There have been different formulas, different ratios, fragrance trials, rejected ideas, tiny adjustments and plenty of going back to something we'd already decided was “finished”.

That's been the point.

We didn't want to find the quickest route to something we could sell. We wanted to develop something we were actually happy to put SKÄGG LABS on.

Now, we've reached that point.

Six versions. One finished collection.

Product development is complete.

The work isn't — there's still plenty between here and launch — but this feels like a milestone worth marking.

And for the first time, SKÄGG is starting to feel a little less like something we're developing…

and a lot more like something that's coming.

“Natural” gets used a lot in grooming.

On its own, though, it doesn't tell you very much.

For SKÄGG, natural formulation isn't about making an ingredient list as long or exotic as possible.

It's almost the opposite.

Every ingredient needs a reason to be there. What does it contribute? How does it affect the feel of the product? How does it work alongside everything else in the formula?

And being natural doesn't give an ingredient a free pass. It still has to perform.

That's the thinking behind SKÄGG LABS:
Use what's needed.
Understand why it's there.
Leave out what isn't.

Not too much. Not too little.

Lagom.

Beard oil. Butter. Balm. Wax. What's actually the difference?

They're often talked about as though they're interchangeable.

They're not.

OIL — lightweight conditioning for the beard and skin underneath.
BUTTER — richer conditioning, softness and manageability with little to light hold.
BALM — conditioning with more control and structure.
WAX — when hold and deliberate styling become the priority.

You don't necessarily need all four. The right product depends on your beard and what you're trying to achieve with it.

Understanding the job comes before choosing the product.

We could have launched already.

There are certainly quicker ways to start a beard-care brand.

Pick a ready-made formula. Choose a fragrance. Put a label on it. Start selling.

That's just not what we're building.

We've tested formulas. Changed them. Tested again. We've compared fragrances, worked through packaging decisions and questioned details most people will probably never notice.

And we're still going.

Not because everything needs to be needlessly complicated — but because when the first bottle carries SKÄGG LABS, we want to know why every part of it is there.

No arbitrary launch date. No rushing something out of the door.

It'll be ready when we're happy to put our name on it.

Your beard isn't the only thing you're looking after.

There's skin underneath it — and it's surprisingly easy to forget about.

Beard oil shouldn't simply be wiped across the outside of your beard until it looks shiny.

Start with a small amount. Warm it between your palms, work it through the beard towards the skin underneath, then distribute the remainder through the hair.

Need a little more? Add it.

Saturating everything from the start isn't the goal.

Conditioned. Not coated.

The SKÄGG scent library is getting a little darker.

Peppermint. Sandalwood. Coconut.

Those were our starting three — and they're still being developed.
But we felt there was something missing from the other end of the spectrum.

Something woodier. Earthier. A little more rugged.

So we've brought in three new fragrance families to investigate:

VETIVER. CEDARWOOD. LEATHER.

And rather than choosing one supplier and calling it done, we've sourced different interpretations to compare.

Some won't make it.
One might be brilliant.
That's what testing is for.

If you were standing at the SKÄGG bench, which bottle are you reaching for first — Vetiver, Cedarwood or Leather?

How much beard oil do you actually need?

Probably less than you think.

There isn't one perfect number for every beard. Length matters, but so do density, hair texture, skin and the product you're using.

As a starting point:
Short beard — 2–3 drops
Medium beard — 3–5 drops
Long/full beard — 5–8 drops

Work it between your hands, distribute it through the beard and towards the skin underneath, then add more only if you need it.

The aim is conditioned — not coated.

Save this one for your next beard routine.

The packaging isn't something we're leaving until the end.

Before there's a finished SKÄGG LABS beard oil, there are dozens of smaller decisions to make — including what it actually lives in.

The bottle has to protect the formula.
The closure has to dispense properly.
The packaging has to survive being carried around.
And the whole thing still needs to feel unmistakably SKÄGG.

We've been testing bottles, closures, tubes and presentation alongside the product itself.

Because the details surrounding the formula still form part of the experience.

What matters most to you with grooming packaging — how it looks, how it feels, how practical it is, or all three?
