@skateradepod & @libertygirlsnyc are hosting a gear swap for skaters of all disciplines, so whether it’s jam plugs or grind blocks, bring your unneeded gear and get to know your fellow skaters while doing it.

We know by now you’ve fallen in love with our most recent interviewee, Kapulani. ♥️
Well here’s a second chance to connect with @hawaiianblaze, in the form of this upbeat, short, and sweet playlist.

If you’re looking for a boost for your skate session, look no further.

Part club energy, part sensual & sexy, this playlist is all heart and may best be described as the sapphic, indigenous, queer-as-hell love story that you didn’t know you needed.

Link to the playlist is in the show notes of this interview and in our stories! 💥 by @skateradepod

📣 NEW EPISODE OUT NOW !!! Coming at you a day ahead of The National Day of Mourning, with an episode highlighting and celebrating an amazing Indigenous skater.

We were so excited to sit down and get to know this week’s guest better. Coming into the interview being familiar with their artwork and roles in roller derby community, we were delighted to learn that this didn’t even scratch the surface of how powerful and thoughtful they are!

An Indigenous, queer, Māhū skater, Kapulani AKA @hawaiianblaze carries with them a story of resilience and resistance. In this interview, they illuminate their connection to their roots, sharing family stories and Hawaiian cultural history. They reflect on what it has meant to skate for Team Indigenous Rising and along with their teammates being the representation of Indigenous athletes in the sport. They also share how the diverse and shared experiences of this team have strengthened them as a collective of many nations.

They speak of how roller derby has guided them to step into their power, in realizing that they are more than good enough to skate for Gotham one of the foremost leagues in roller derby.

We speak on the challenges roller derby is facing today to create an atmosphere that is supportive and inclusive to skaters regardless of gender identity or race. In this regard, we talk about the discourse around these topics, and the exclusionary treatment of Team Indigenous Rising at BOTAS.

We also get into their seemingly destined journey to becoming a stained glass artist, and the ways that they’ve channeled the medium into having important conversations about Hawaiian folklore and the epidemic of violence against Indigenous women.

Don’t miss this interview that is overflowing with queer Indigenous joy! Come along and get a look into the world of this multi-faceted powerhouse of a skater and community member!
