Voices and hands of people I love 🌱 words are mine from an essay on transformative pain:
Five weeks ago, I sat with my computer in my lap in the dark of my living room; the sun had just set and the shadows grew quickly against the brick walls. I could see my face in the little box on Zoom, illuminated by the blue of my computer screen. Some faces I didn’t recognize stared back at me, all of us listening. Tamara Santibanez, a newer friend of mine and the leader of this workshop, was speaking about the history of Bricks and their political mythologies. They had started the workshop asking us if we’d ever heard the sound of a brick. “The sound?” I thought to myself. The sound. And suddenly I could hear the tips of my fingers brushing against the grain of a red brick, almost like the sound of cornmeal being mixed together with water in a metal bowl or the sound of a semi-dry paintbrush on new canvas. The sound a brick makes. Tamara, their face like a smooth moon stone, spoke steadily as they examined the symbol of the brick as something that can both break and build, “the Brick is a building block. It is also used to break through walls, windows, and so it embodies this beautiful, symbolically-rich paradox. We can build something ‘brick by brick’ and we can also dismantle something ‘brick by brick’.” As Tamara says this, I’m instantly transported to the backseat of a rental car, I’m maybe 8, and my mom is singing Pete Seeger’s “Garden Song” as we drive to visit my grandparents in Pennsylvania, her voice warbling over his, “inch by inch, row by row….we are made of dreams and bones…grain for grain, sun and rain, find my way in nature’s chain, tune my body and my brain to the music of the land…” Tamara goes on to say, “there’s this fluidity…the Single Brick, sort of conversely, you have prison walls, border walls, impenetrable brick fortresses, but then you have these agile and sort of threatening Single Bricks in their potential to move, the potential to be thrown, to be wielded. You know, they can be held in the hand…and can really threaten those structures, and serve as a reminder that they’re incrementally made and can be incrementally disrupted and torn down.” by @skendalls
