Creating Justice LA open mic nights every Thursdays! @creatingjusticela_ by @skidrowcoffee

Yesterday we hosted a group of pediatric residents from UCLA who are learning about community based approaches to health. We visited Skid Row People’s Market (@skidrowpeoplesmarket), our Peace and Healing Center, and strolled down 5th St. talking about SRO apartments, gentrification, local parks, and also connecting with friends in the neighborhood. It is always uplifting to be with young people critically engaging, which is what our organization Creating Justice LA (@creatingjusticela_) is exactly about… Empowering one another by engaging in community, civically, and creatively. Thank you again to Dr. Lydia Kim and all at @uclapedsresidency. by @skidrowcoffee

Announcing the next stage in our series of conversations about SRO Hotels, and what’s needed now to have decent, truly affordable housing in Skid Row.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28 at 7PM

Join us for a panel conversation moderated by Rosten Woo, and including:

- Jerry Jones, Greater LA Coalition on Homelessness
- Marc Tousignant, director of supportive housing for Enterprise’s Southern California Market and lead author of “Preserving Affordable Single Room Occupancy Portfolios Across California”
- Claire Knowlton, nonprofit finance expert and lead author of “Redesign Required: Lessons for Permanent Supportive Housing from Skid Row Housing Trust Buildings”

This panel brings together leading experts in housing policy and specifically SRO design and financing to talk about lessons we can learn from the recent and ongoing crisis with downtown’s SROs and the demise of Skid Row Housing Trust. Come join the conversation about what is happening behind the scenes, and how we can think big picture about the future of this crucial housing supply in Skid Row, and California at large.

This is the next stage in our latest exhibition, HOTELS IN CRISIS (AGAIN). The exhibition is unfolding in a “learning in public” format, where each new stage of the exhibition will be informed by public conversations.

Come be part of the conversation, and help develop the exhibition (and, we hope, the future of housing in Skid Row) with us! by @skidrowcoffee

This Friday, January 23, 12pm in PLACITA OLVERA in downtown #LosAngeles:

From: the Twin Cities to Orlando, to Columbus, to Phoenix, to Seattle, to Boston, to LA, to New York, @seiu_org members and our allies will demand ICE stop terrorizing our communities and harassing our neighbors.

No one is safe under ICE!

This state violence endangers all of us – our families, our freedoms, and our future, no matter who we are.
In our union, we can meet history where it stands. In the labor movement and in our communities, we take care of each other.

We are putting big corporations on notice. There is no fence to sit on. You are either on the side of ICE or on the side of our community—which includes residents, workers, and customers.

Pastor Stephen Cue Jn-Marie (@creatingjusticela_) and former owner Danny Park (@dannypark213) went on the Kelly Clarkson Show to share about the transition of Skid Row People’s Market from its Korean owned roots into the cradle of a Black-led grassroots organization as a poignant benchmark and timely reminder of the important and interchaning roles of peace, healing and justice in community. We extend deep gratitudes to the @kellyclarksonshow for this opportunity and gift and to all of our friends, family, and comrades whose daily acts of love exemplifies Dr. King’s vision of the beloved community.

This episode will air tomorrow on Dr. King Day, Monday, 1/19. The show airs in Los Angeles on NBC at 2PM PST. by @skidrowcoffee

#CaesarSalad freshly prepared. Romaine lettuce, croutons, and dressing made from scratch! Dijon mustard, red vinegar, Worcestershire, anchovy, garlic, lemon, egg yolk, olive oil, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, and salt. 🥬🥗😋

Lettuce aside from it being refreshing and crunchy, provides a natural source of hydration, antioxidants, and fiber! by @skidrowcoffee

#Sorrel or #AguaDeJamaica traces back to West Africa, brought to the Caribbean via the transatlantic trade, becoming a symbol of resilience and memory. The hibiscus plant was used for medical and cultural purposes, eventually evolving into Jamaica’s iconic crimson Christmas drink, flavored with ginger, cinnamon, and pimento, symbolizing heritage, vitality, and a connection to ancestral roots, often served with rum. by @skidrowcoffee
