Ask Dr. Angela: Why do my hands and feet feel raw and look red?

“Some chemotherapy drugs leave the body through sweat glands, which are concentrated in the palms and soles, so the skin there takes the highest exposure. Changes in skin cell turnover can also cause thickening.

Check in with your care team first. They may send you to a dermatologist, who might suggest looser clothing, less friction, and sometimes prescription medication.”

We’re in @wwd.

“Not a single person talked to me about my skin, not one person.”

SKIN UNION co-founder Cathy O’Brien, on her chemotherapy and radiation. Nobody prepared her for what treatment would do to her skin, and nobody had an answer when she asked. That is why SKIN UNION exists.

Three products made for skin going through cancer treatment. The Balm. The Wash. The Cream.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Most of what you’ll see this month is about screening and treatment. This is about what happens to your skin while you’re going through it.

SKIN UNION co-founder Cathy O’Brien felt the chemo right away. The skin changes came after the second round: sensitivity almost immediately, then small red bumps around her lips and under her nose, then some of her nails turned black.

She was offered a nutritionist. She was offered a social worker. No one talked to her about her skin.

“It was infuriating to not have any guidance during a time when not only did my skin hurt, but there were so many changes happening to it.”

Her doctors, who she calls amazing, didn’t have an answer. She turned to her now co-founder, Kristen, who knows ingredients and ran everything past her first. “I was petrified to use any kind of soap.”

What she wanted was simple: a skin protocol from her care team, made of products people in treatment had actually used and trusted.

SKIN UNION exists because of that.

If you’re in treatment right now, here’s Cathy’s advice: Hydrate throughout the day. Lips, face, hands, feet, nails, head. Everywhere.

This month, finish the sentence with us: I wish I had supportive skincare when ______. by @skin.union

SKIN UNION in @forbes.

“Everything breaks down when you’re going through chemo and radiation. Your skin is absolutely pummeled, and the beauty industry does not address it.”

Co-founder and CEO Cathy O’Brien, on what nobody prepared her for. She asked her oncologist for skincare advice and came up empty. So she called Kristen Sgarlato, and they built the skincare that should have existed.

Three products made for skin going through cancer treatment: The Balm, The Wash, The Cream.
