Three vitamin A derivatives. One goal: healthier, smoother, more youthful-looking skin. But their biological activity and clinical evidence differ.

01 | RETINOL — THE GENTLE START

Requires two conversions to become active retinoic acid.
• Supports collagen synthesis and improves fine lines
• Helps regulate keratinization and skin texture
• Gradually improves uneven pigmentation
• Generally less potent, depending on formulation

02 | RETINAL — THE MIDDLE GROUND

Requires only one conversion to retinoic acid.
• Supports collagen production and epidermal renewal
• Helps improve fine lines, pigmentation, and texture
• May benefit acne-prone skin
• Potentially more active than retinol, but results depend on formulation

03 | TRETINOIN — THE GOLD STANDARD

Already biologically active. No conversion required.
• Stimulates collagen synthesis and reduces collagen degradation
• Normalizes follicular keratinization to treat acne
• Improves fine wrinkles and photodamage
• Has the strongest clinical evidence of the three
• Higher potential for dryness, peeling, and irritation

THE KEY DIFFERENCE?
Retinol → Retinal → Retinoic Acid (Tretinoin)

AZELAIC ACID | One of the most multitasking actives in skincare. 🧪

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, keratinization-normalizing, and pigment-regulating properties.

Why is it so useful?

→ ACNE
Helps normalize abnormal keratinization to keep pores clear while reducing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions. It also has antimicrobial activity against Cutibacterium acnes.

→ REDNESS + ROSACEA
Its anti-inflammatory activity helps decrease inflammatory signaling and can improve persistent redness and inflammatory lesions associated with rosacea.

→ HYPERPIGMENTATION
Azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase — an enzyme involved in melanin production — making it especially useful for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and melasma.

→ TEXTURE
By helping regulate epidermal cell turnover and follicular keratinization, it can gradually improve congestion and uneven skin texture.

CONCENTRATION MATTERS:
5–10% is commonly found in cosmetic/OTC formulations, while higher-strength formulations such as 15–20% are available in prescription products depending on formulation and location.

And one of my favorite things about it? It addresses acne + inflammation + pigmentation at the same time — particularly helpful when treating breakouts without wanting to worsen the discoloration they leave behind.

Results are gradual. Consistency matters. SPF is non-negotiable when treating pigmentation. ✨

• Stay current with screening recommended for your age and personal risk.
• Have new lumps, skin changes, or unusual nipple discharge evaluated—even after a normal mammogram.
• Follow up on abnormal results. Screening is only the first step; diagnostic testing provides answers.
• If cancer is diagnosed, timely, individualized treatment matters.

As a nurse, I want this reminder to reach beyond October: make the appointment, ask questions, and follow through. You deserve answers and access to care. 💗
