Grab a mirror and stand in good light. (The car visor mirror at noon. We all know that one.) Run your finger along your chin. If you feel a coarse little hair that wasn’t there last year, welcome to the club. Me too.

Here’s why it shows up. During menopause, estrogen drops faster than testosterone. The balance tips, and hair starts growing in places it never did before. Chin, upper lip, along the jaw. Your genes play a part too, which is why your sister may get a whole crop and you get three.

Here’s what works, from best to worst:

1. Electrolysis. A tiny current stops the root, one hair at a time. It works on dark and gray hairs. It takes a few visits, but once a hair is gone, it’s gone for good.

2. Laser. Fewer hairs come back after each visit. But it only sees dark hair, so gray and white hairs need electrolysis.

3. Waxing or threading. These pull the hair out by the root, so you stay smooth for weeks. And after almost 30 years of waxing, here’s what I’ve seen over and over: wax long enough, and a lot of those hairs stop coming back.

4. Plucking. It pulls the hair out by the root too, just one hair at a time. It’s quick for one stray hair. But digging for a short one can leave a red bump or an ingrown hair, so go easy.

5. Dermaplaning. It only cuts the hair at the surface, so a coarse chin hair is back in a few days and feels like stubble. And no, it won’t grow back thicker. That’s a myth. It’s great for soft peach fuzz, though.

Run your finger over your cheek at 3 o’clock. If you feel dry little flakes of makeup lifting at the edges, your makeup is sticking to dry skin underneath.

During menopause, estrogen drops and our skin makes less of its own oil and ceramides. That’s the glue that lets old cells fall off smooth. Without it, they clump and flake, and our makeup grabs right on.

So we pick at it. (Me too.) But picking pulls off cells that aren’t ready to go, and that leaves even more dry skin for tomorrow’s makeup to stick to.

Then we buy a new foundation. But the problem was never the makeup. It’s the skin under it.

Here’s how we fix the skin underneath:

1. Hands off. Soften the flakes instead. Mist a hyaluronic acid toner on damp skin and let them soak it up.

2. Two nights a week, use a gentle lactic acid. It melts the glue that holds the flakes, so they slide off on their own. Start slow.

3. Feed the skin below with niacinamide - that is a NAD+ booster. Research shows it helps our skin make more of its own ceramides.

4. Seal it in with triple ceramides: NP, AP and EOP. They put back the glue menopause took away.

5. Feed it from the inside with omega-3s, protein and water.

In two weeks, run your finger over your cheek at 3 o’clock again. Smooth skin, smooth makeup.

RF microneedling puts tiny needles into the skin and heats them. That makes a wound on purpose, so the skin heals and builds new collagen.
