Long before I became a beauty and spa therapist, the ocean had already become part of my story.
I grew up in Portugal, where life has always been deeply connected to the sea.
Some of my happiest childhood memories are family holidays by the coast. I remember exploring rock pools, collecting shells and discovering the different textures of seaweed. One of our favourite games was squeezing the tiny air bladders of Fucus Serratus seaweed and rubbing the gel-like substance onto our skin, convinced we had invented our own skincare products. That connection between my childhood memories and my professional life is probably why I have always been fascinated by thalassotherapy, a term derived from the Greek words thalassa meaning “sea” and therapeia meaning “treatment”. It refers to the therapeutic use of seawater, seaweed, marine mud, marine climate and other ocean derived resources to support health, wellbeing and skin health.
Over the next few weeks, I would love to share that fascination with you. We will explore the science behind marine ingredients, their benefits for the skin and how the ocean continues to inspire innovation in cosmetic science.
Sometimes, the passions that shape our careers begin long before we realise it.
Mine began by the sea.
And yours, I would love to know yours

For centuries, clay has been one of skincare’s most valued natural ingredients. Used in Ancient Egyptian beauty rituals and traditional practices across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, these mineral rich earths were prized long before modern cosmetics for their remarkable ability to purify and rebalance the skin.

Today, cosmetic science helps us understand why. Each clay has a unique mineral composition, giving it distinct absorbency, texture and skin benefits. Choosing the right clay is not about selecting the most popular one. It is about matching its properties to your skin’s individual needs.

Kaolin offers a gentle cleansing action, making it ideal for sensitive or delicate skin.

French Green Clay is highly absorbent and well suited to oily and blemish prone skin.

Bentonite provides an intensive purifying effect, helping to remove excess sebum and impurities from combination to oily skin.

Pink Clay combines mild cleansing with a soft brightening effect, making it an excellent choice for sensitive or lacklustre complexions.

Rhassoul Clay, naturally rich in magnesium, silica and potassium, helps improve skin texture while maintaining balance across most skin types.

Nature provided the ingredient. Science explains how it works. Understanding both allows us to make more informed skincare choices.

Healthy skin isn’t built by one expensive product or one perfect routine.

It’s built by the small choices we repeat every day.

✨ Wearing sunscreen, even when it’s cloudy.
💧 Keeping your skin hydrated.
🌙 Prioritising rest and recovery.
🧴 Choosing consistency over constantly chasing the latest trend.

Skincare isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating habits that protect, strengthen and support your skin over time.

Your future skin is shaped by what you do today, not by what you do once.

What’s one skincare habit you’ll never skip?

Your skin feels the heat too. ☀️

Hot weather, UV exposure and sweating can increase redness, sensitivity and irritation, especially if you already have reactive skin.

A few simple habits can make a big difference:
• Wear sunscreen every day.
• Keep your skincare routine gentle.
• Stay hydrated.
• Avoid over-exfoliating.
• Listen to your skin and adjust your routine when temperatures rise.

Healthy skin isn’t about doing more, it’s about giving your skin what it needs, when it needs it.

Have you ever noticed your skin looks different when you travel?

That’s because your skin responds to much more than the products you use.

Changes in climate, humidity, water quality, UV exposure, sleep patterns, stress levels, and even air conditioning can all influence how your skin behaves.

The same person can experience different skin concerns simply by changing environments.

Sometimes what looks like a skincare problem is actually a lifestyle or environmental response.

Understanding these triggers can help you make better decisions for your skin whether you’re at home or on the other side of the world.

Healthy skin isn’t just about skincare.

It’s about context. by @skinplanner

Your skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.

Many people assume that oily skin means their skin has enough moisture.

It doesn’t.

Oil and hydration are not the same thing.

When skin becomes dehydrated, it may actually produce more oil in an attempt to compensate. This often leads to a confusing cycle:

• Tightness after cleansing
• Excess shine throughout the day
• Makeup that doesn’t sit well
• Skin that feels uncomfortable despite looking oily

In many cases, the solution isn’t stronger products or more exfoliation.

It’s supporting the skin barrier, using gentle cleansing, and focusing on hydration.

Look for ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol and ceramides.

Healthy skin is not about removing all oil.

It’s about creating balance.

Save this post if you’ve ever felt oily and dry at the same time.

Eczema is often treated like “just dry skin”, but the reality is much more complex.

When the skin barrier becomes compromised, skin loses water more easily and becomes more reactive to irritation, stress and environmental triggers.

Sometimes the most effective approach is not adding more products, but reducing irritation and supporting the barrier consistently.

Healing takes consistency, not intensity.

Psoriasis is often misunderstood as “just dry skin” but it’s a complex inflammatory immune condition that can affect far more than the skin itself.

During flare-ups, many people try to exfoliate more, use stronger products, or constantly switch routines in the hope of “fixing” the skin quickly.
But inflamed skin usually needs the opposite: less aggression, more support.

Gentle skincare won’t cure psoriasis, but it can help reduce discomfort, support the skin barrier, and make the skin feel more comfortable during flare-ups.

Psoriasis can also affect emotional wellbeing, confidence, stress levels and nervous system regulation, something that’s often overlooked in conversations about skin health.

Sometimes supportive skincare is not about perfection.
It’s about reducing overload.

Rosacea is often misunderstood as “just sensitive skin” but it’s a chronic inflammatory condition that requires a gentler, more supportive approach.

One of the biggest mistakes?
Trying to dry it out, scrub it away or overload the skin with harsh actives.

With rosacea, the goal isn’t to “fight” the skin.
It’s to calm inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier and understand your triggers.

Sometimes healthier skin starts with doing less, not more.

Fragrance in skincare is often misunderstood.

It is not essential for results and for some skin types it can trigger irritation or sensitivity.
But not all skin reacts the same.

If your skin tolerates fragrance, you do not need to remove it from your routine.

For many, skincare is also a ritual.
Texture, scent and feeling play a role in consistency and how we connect with our routine.

The goal is not fear.
It is awareness.

“Botox in a bottle” sounds great for marketing… but skincare deserves honesty.

Argireline may help soften the appearance of expression lines, but it won’t replicate injectable results.

Understanding what ingredients can realistically do helps you build better routines, and set more realistic expectations..
