From a guppy to a bell ringer to the town elder. Being at @macdowell1907 has changed who I am not only as an artist but as a person. Spending the holidays and entering a new year there allowed me to start 2024 on the right foot amongst fellow creatives. I got to experience the gambit of artists from visual artists to filmmakers to writers and composers; I was blessed to be around and pick the brains of New York Times best sellers, Guggenheim award winners, Paris Review/Art Forum wordsmiths, to faculty at some of the most prestigious universities; both making and researching amazing work, every presentation was worthwhile and continued to awe time and time again.

Being & working in the same spaces that former artists have shared, you could still feel their energy radiating through all of the spaces. (James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Walter Dean Myers, Alice Walker; just to name some that have influenced my work — I was lucky enough to make work in the same studio as the great @howardenapindell ).

I got to experience how focused and dedicated these artists were day in and day out and it really validated what I’ve sacrificed over the years. I went in as a sponge not knowing what to expect and I’d liked to think came out a bit wiser. From meteor showers to cold plunges, I want to say I appreciate everyone who I’ve met during the last few months and to those who have taken interest in the very niche work I’m doing. Thank you to all of the wonderful staff that make MacDowell special, I can’t wait to go make my way back !

- 150k Words, 1 Manifesto, 4 & 1/2 Paintings, 1/2 an Animation, 4 Graphics and 5 Books Finished. A productive residency to say the least.

•

I’d also like to extend a special thank you to folks who’ve motivated me to apply, have given consistent constructive feedback, and believed in the work I’m doing since the inception of it.

Meet our SaveArtSpace: The Butterfly Effect curator @skipbrea. Less than two weeks left to apply! Open call for art ends September 21, 2026.

Skip Brea (Bronx, NY) is an Interdisciplinary Artist, Academic, and Residency Director/Co-Creator based in New York City. His research-based practice investigates the representations of Black and Brown cultures through digital image archival research. His main concentrations focus on the canons of painting, literature, and all of the narratives and mythologies that come with them. Brea began his art practice primarily as a painter; however, he is currently working with new modes of technology as the field continues to expand. Brea is conceptualizing digital graphics and painting tools to question and remodel the history being presented in front of us, both physically, digitally, and theoretically. He deconstructs and reconstructs what we deem as potential visual history challenging what is real versus what is artificial with synthesized versions of historical visual cues.

New Open Call for Art! Curated by @skipbrea.

@SaveArtSpace is proud to present The Butterfly Effect, a public art exhibition on billboard ad space in New York, NY, opening October 30, 2026.

Every mark and moment carries a history, whether metaphorical, spiritual, or physical. The theme of Stories and Movements titled “The Butterfly Effect” reflects on the moments that have shaped us, the stories we have heard, the experiences we carry, the sounds that we listen to, and the ones we still hope to encounter. It considers all the arts as powerful sources of movement and memory; the rhythms and lyrics that can transport us, connect us, or mark a particular time in our lives. This theme celebrates the energy, uncertainty, and possibility of moving through the world, as well as the stories that remain with us long after the moments have passed.

We invite artists of all ages and talents to submit their artwork between August 24 and September 21, 2026 in order to be considered for the exhibition. This is an opportunity to have your work placed on billboard ad space in New York, NY.

Mark Your Calendars - I’ll be showing a 3 Piece Animated Looped Short titled With & Without — Scenes willingly blend together three collaged paintings that attempt to depict a story about absence and abundance through movement and tactical blending.

The Gallatin Galleries’ upcoming exhibit, “The Best of All Possible Worlds”, will be on view from September 10th - October 17th, 2026! @nyugallatingalleries

The exhibit features 12 contemporary artists who are engaged in world-building practices that range from the fantastical to the transcendent while offering an optimistic vision of the world.

Taking its title from a famous passage in Voltaire’s Candide, the exhibition flips the perspective of the French author, who satirizes his protagonist’s unfailing optimism. Instead of mocking Candide, the exhibit asks what would happen if we agreed with him and embraced a view that the world is as it should be.

The brilliant artists featured are: Skip Brea @skipbrea, Esteban Cabeza de Baca estebancabezadebaca, Scott Csoke @scottesoke, Rocio Delaloye @rociodelaloye, Sherly Fan @sherlyfanstudio, Emma Kathleen Hepburn Ferrer @emmahepburnferrer, Fitz @artbyfitz, heartkat @heartkatco, Justine Kurland @justinekurland_studio, lasercats @_lasercats, Pat McCarthy @pigeon_pat, and Ellie Pritts @elliepritts

A huge shoutout to Curator & Artist Keith Miller and the Gallatin Team for putting this together.

“Freedom is too often referred to as something which has been, should have been, or could be, achieved. It is perhaps more helpful to think of it as a space toward which we can work. In this way, it is good to be reminded that the work of creating the best of all possible worlds isn’t out there, but on us, all of us. Even if optimism is naive, without it, we might be lost.”

Opening Reception: September 9th, 6pm-8pm, at the Gallatin
Galleries (1 Washington Place, New York, NY, 10003) by @skipbrea

Excited to share that the seventh Bronx Museum Biennial has been extended through September 6th. It was an amazing fellowship to have been a part of and an incredible cohort of artists to be affiliated with. The museum is always free to visit, it’s well worth the trip.

Also join us Saturday August 29th for the culminating open house, featuring a panel discussion between @bryanfernandez.studio @erickhe @ricki.dwyer and myself as we close up the final moments of the Biennial.

The Seventh Aim Biennial @bronxmuseum has been an incredible experience, it’s been an honor to be part of the AIM Fellowship! So grateful for all, pull up for the artist walkthrough and short Q&A !

Special shoutout to @argenisphoto for always capturing these events ! by @skipbrea

Thank you, @sephsees , for the care and intention you brought to writing about the exhibition at @bronxmuseum & thank you to @hyperallergic for continuing to create space for thoughtful, rigorous engagement with artists and their work.

@sephsees ; your perspective is both specific and singular. The way you write feels considered, like the work was truly spent time with, observed closely, and allowed to unfold on its own terms. That depth of attention is rare, and it does not go unnoticed so thank you again. I deeply appreciate the generosity, clarity, and nuance you bring to your writing, and all that you do to support artists through such meaningful criticism.

You all can catch the full article live now on my story and on the @hyperallergic website.

Truly grateful. Please go check out the article and exhibition while it’s still up. More events for the public coming soon ! by @skipbrea
