Digging the photograph shoebox: Me and my grandad posing for a photograph outside his home from his much younger days. I was seventeen at the time, and rather proud of my mail order jeans from the Phaze catalogue, and my winkle picker boots with toilet roll pushed down inside to help them keep their pointy form, bought either from somewhere in Stoke on Trent, or possibly Afflecks Palace, Manchester. At that point, probably a Sigue Sigue Sputnik or Cramps t-shirt beneath the clearly too-big-for-me second hand denim jacket. Hair kept up by Boots own un-perfumed super hold hairspray (white can, pale pink halftone dots), and a blast of hot air from my sister’s bottle green hairdryer. Grandad wore his cap almost permanently all year round. The photograph was taken by my dad. #winklepickers by @skipratmedia

As well as asking* @marco.pirroni to sign Cartrouble for @davidthousandwords in exchange for a ticket for the book signing and conversation because like a dufus I didn’t get one myself because I didn’t know whether I could make it, everyone’s favourite feedback manifesting glam punk pop contrarian signed my copy of Dog Eat Dog too. *He nearly made me queue up and everything, but bollocks to that.

Humblebrag/reminisce: When DJ’ing for The Wolfmen the late great Pete Shelly told me in no uncertain terms how much he loved Marco. And he bought me a pint and told me my selection was “really great” (swoon). If I never get to orbit the worlds of my favourite musical artists ever again, I’ll remain forever happy in the knowledge that Pete Shelly gave me a bearhug in his donkey jacket whilst gazing at Marco from afar.

In 1975, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren made a stencilled shirt proclaiming that we should Be Reasonable Demand The Impossible. I still love that sentiment even though I don’t know exactly what it really means.

At the time, I had just started school, and as part of that, started swimming lessons. Little pool to begin with, using floats.

A few years later, a swim bag came onto the scene. Made of super bright orange slightly rubbery highly perfumed plastic, featuring a drawing of a proper grown up swimmer. Variants came later in sky blue and lime green, adorned by gymnasts and athletes.

As me and my mates got a little older, we all had these bags (you bought them from the baths), and after swimming, we had a game of holding onto the swimming bag chord and swinging them around, with your damp towel and trunks acting as a weight, and launching them as far into the sky as you could. They would come back down to earth with a sodden massive whump.

When I was about ten, I was selected for the school swimming team for a local county gala (see photo of angelic me in the last slide).

The other week I was looking for a gym bag online but - and I have no idea why - I decided to order a repro orange swim bag from a company who print text onto your bag on demand. So I now own a bright orange swim bag paying homage to that shirt (and that rather confusing message), and going swimming with my mates. The only slight problem is that ‘BE REASONABLE…’ has the faint whiff of something one of those self-obsessed gym influencer types would say/write/post, rather than a pair of Situationist obsessed provocateurs who changed style (and music a little bit) forever.

Music note: Tiger Feet by Mud (1975) was the first record I ever owned.
Photo note: That was my PE teacher in the Adidas t-shirt - the first person I knew who wore one. I thought it was pretty ace.

JG Ballard in conversation with Mavis Nicholson, presenter of Good Afternoon, Thames Television, 1977.

Ballard referred to computers as “invisible technologies”, and the potential problems carried within them as “invisible threats”. Half a century ago, give or take a few months.

Ballard died in April 2009, the same month that the Apple app store reached 1 billion downloads.
