There is something powerful about seeing your own world reflected on screen. In Trinidad and Tobago, bringing films home to the @ttfilmfestival means giving audiences the chance to see our landscapes, hear our voices, recognize our experiences and connect with the stories that are uniquely ours. Austin is leaning into its bat era. 🦇

There’s something new under the Congress Avenue Bridge!
Bat City is a new educational experience created through a collaboration between filmmaker @skipswildlife, @merlintuttlesbats, @austinbatrefuge, @batconservationinternational, @thetrailconservancy, and @texasparkswildlifefoundation.

The experience includes new signs, short films and digital content designed to help you learn more about Austin’s famous bats and why protecting them matters.

#HabitatUncoveR3D with Skip Hobbie (@skipswildlife)

For Bat City, a series of educational shorts created for audiences visiting Austin’s famous Congress Avenue Bridge, cinematographer Skip Hobbie set out to showcase the beauty and diversity of bats around the world. Working with Merlin Tuttle’s Bat Conservation, the team traveled to Costa Rica for a single intensive shoot, capturing as many species as possible in one location.

Filming bats comes with its own unique challenges. Fast-moving and most active after dark, they require patience, specialist knowledge, and high frame rates to reveal behavior that happens too quickly for the human eye. Skip used the RED V-RAPTOR shooting 8K at 120fps for wider sequences, paired with a Phantom VEO 4K for close-ups. The RED V-RAPTOR also captured interviews with renowned bat conservationist Merlin Tuttle in 8K, while the RED GEMINI became a low-light vérité camera for following biologists at work, often illuminated only by headlamps.

For Skip, natural history filmmaking is about giving audiences access to creatures they may never otherwise see. By revealing the beauty and behavior of bats in ways the human eye cannot, he hopes to create a deeper understanding of these often misunderstood animals and inspire people to care about their protection.

@swaggonerrr and @trevorscottatx were joined by Emmy Award-winning wildlife filmmaker @skipswildlife to talk all things “Bat City” and the fascinating world of Austin’s famous Congress Avenue Bridge bats.
