Four Years That Changed My Life 🇳🇴

A few years ago, life brought me to a place I had never even heard of before: Balestrand, Norway.

I arrived by boat on a foggy evening, where Maya welcomed me with a warm smile, drove me to Kviknes Hotel, and introduced me to the kitchen that would become my second home. Throughout my four years there, she was always the person who looked after everyone living and working at the hotel, making sure each of us felt welcome.

From my very first day, I knew this hotel was different. Everyone greeted each other, asked how they were doing, and treated one another with genuine respect. It wasn’t just kindness for newcomers. It was part of the culture.

Like every chef, I started from the bottom. My first job was preparing and counting potatoes. Every professional journey begins somewhere.

The people who shaped my career were Executive Chef Alfred Kerschbaumer and Sous Chef Witek Kudla. They taught me discipline, professionalism, and the importance of never compromising on quality. Everything I know today as a chef has its roots in those four years.

I’ll also never forget Sigurd Kvikne, who greeted every employee every day with the simple question:

“How are you?”

It sounds ordinary, but after hearing those words every day for four years, you understand that people truly matter.

The hotel’s values were reflected in everything: fair working conditions, high standards, teamwork, and respect. Whenever someone needed help, the Kvikne family was there.

It is no surprise that Kviknes Hotel was named World’s Best Historic Hotel Resort in 2024. For me, that award is not only about the beautiful building or its history.

It is about the people.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Sandra,Kari Kvikne, Sigurd Kvikne, Mulla Kvikne, Marta, Maya, Alfred Kerschbaumer, Witek Kudla, and every colleague I had the privilege of working with.

Thank you for believing in me, for giving me the opportunity to grow, and for helping shape both my career and my life.

Balestrand was never just a place where I worked.

It became my second home.
