“One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Unread Messages”
Oil on canvas
16x20 inches

Currently on display at the @huntartgallery until May 24th along with the work of six other resident artists.

I aimed to capture the visceral feeling of constantly being available online through messaging and email. Bribes for your attention are constant and I don’t know about you, but it seems like I always have a constant barrage of urgent things that I must reply to, despite my best efforts to create healthy boundaries with my availability.

The overall “Body of Work” that includes four pieces deals with the adolescent growing pains of people growing up at the cusp of the Information Age’s takeover. The title comes from the amount of unopened texts that I had at the time of titling the work. I am now up to 131. 👀

“Hot Singles in Your Inbox”
Oil on canvas
16x20 inches
On view and available at @huntartgallery until May 24th

This piece is part of a diptych with “One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Unread Messages that I posted previous to this piece.

The idea for this piece came to me when I thought of the imaginary dimension in which my spam emails got delivered.

Server rooms are already liminal and Piranesi-esque on their own, it didn’t take much to imagine them in a surrealist world. There is also a visual hint to 9/11 on the work, which changed the political landscape of the US in tandem with the rise of the Information Age.

“One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Unread Messages” is a portrait of the physical and emotional response that I feel when bombarded with this electronic information.

“Raised by the Internet”
Oil on canvas
16x20 inches
At @huntartgallery until May 24

I grew up in an extremely rural area (there is only one stop light in the whole county and the nearest town, 12 miles away and over a mountain, barely has a population over 1000.) To call it isolating is an understatement.

This is why when high speed internet finally came to the area in my early teens, it changed my life. I didn’t have much of a social life at school and did not have a great relationship with my parents. ( I still don’t 😅)

I quickly joined online social media apps, forums, and group chats. This new haven molded my understanding of the world just as much as any irl parenting. That’s why the “feed” of information takes up nearly as much space as the parents. The reference for me and my parents is one of the few pictures taken of us all together and happened to be their wedding. I was a flower girl at their wedding and in the original photo I am hiding behind a bouquet. I replaced that flower arrangement with this 💐 emoji.

I removed the eyes and used a limited color palette, to give a dreamy, nostalgic feeling to the figures, while the internet references remained clear and vibrant for the most part.

What website, apps, and memes do you recognize?

I made a cool painting on a piece of wood I found in the trash. It’s too wet and shiny to take pictures, so you’ll have to wait to see it. Weird arm angle grasping a horse painting by @sky.vance.studios

Sometimes a dark, lonely trip home is the emotional release you need. Where no one can see you cry, grimace, wail. Let it out

Excited to announce our First Friday opening for October, Who Eats Who? , a new series of paintings by @sky.vance.studios ! Who Eats Who will bring us face to face with a question we ask ourselves every spooky season: What if all our favorite treats were actually little sentient creatures, and if so, would they be delicious delights or demonic desserts? Come by Friday October 2 to see where you stand. Opening reception starts at 6pm, mark your calendars! taken in Buffalo, New York by @sky.vance.studios

Didn’t get too many pictures because I was too busy #livinginthemoment❤️

One of the fun things when painting en plein air in more populated areas is hearing people tell me their memories of the historic places I’m working on. Thank you to @buffalopleinair and everyone who came by to chat yesterday. It was a scorcher but fun!
