The big 5-0!! Can’t believe I turned 50 this weekend! 🤯 I still feel like such a kid at heart. The universe gifted me Tropical Storm LaLa 🌧️ Not sure if that was sign or not! 🤔 😅

First off, I’m very grateful to everyone who took the time to reach out to me over the weekend to wish me a happy birthday. It meant so much to read all of the kind and thoughtful messages. It filled my heart with pure joy 💕

Much love to my sweetheart @kimmieanne_g for all the thoughtful birthday gifts and being the most wonderful and supportive partner ❤️

Thank you to my parents and @seaneyman also for their generous gifts and all the support through my youth when I was a little bit of a pain in da okole! 😂
Mahalo to all of the close friends who braved the elements to celebrate this special occasion with me!

I got to enjoy 3 wonderful nights of celebrating!! 🥳 Mahalo to Dusty Grable, Mike Nishikawa, Chef Casey @caseykusaka, Chef Rachel @rachelsueae for putting together an amazing dinner set up for family & friends at Uncle Paul’s Corner Store in Manoa.
The food and ambience was absolutely perfect inside (outside there were insane winds 💨 and falling trees in the Manoa Marketplace parking lot 🥴)

A big thank you to Chef Kevin @kevin_guard and Sabrina @br1naz at The Guarden @the__guarden for an unforgettable multi-course curated dinner! Absolutely fantastic!
Mahalo to @jarrettwalters and @hiannawalters for allowing us to use their beautiful home for my dinner. They had no power until 3pm! 😓 We were going to have the dinner by candlelight if needed!

People you know or stay in contact with steadily for almost 30 years is a rarity. I’m very honored and proud to know and befriend local sommelier Danny Matsushita since I started working in the liquor department of Long’s Drugs Manoa Marketplace back around 1999.

Danny was a big reason why I became intrigued with wine and the history behind it. He used to come into my wine section (sometimes a weekly basis) and tell me all about specific wine regions around the world. He was one of the reasons I went out and purchased the book “Wine for Dummies” back as a 23-year old-kid (just so I could try & keep up with him and his demands as a great wine customer in my store!)

Since I left Long’s Drugs in 2002 to pursue a career in the wine business with Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants, I’ve kept in touch with Danny through his various jobs in the service industry. He’s always been a big advocate for myself as well as the Chambers & Chambers portfolio of products.

In the early 2000’s Danny founded his “W.O.W., West Oahu Winegroup”, teaming up with local BYOB businesses, setting up wine pairing dinners for consumers on the Leeward and Westside of the island that couldn’t always make it into town for events. Since then, he’s grown W.O.W.’s email list to over 600+ members!

I was saddened to hear from Danny that he was diagnosed with a serious form of cancer just as we were planning a wine dinner collaboration at one of our mutual friend Chef Mitchell’s restaurants @lacicciahi

We instead dedicated 2 nights last week to honor Danny and raise money during this tough time. We were absolutely blown away by the response and the support. Mahalo to everyone who was able to make it, bidding on all of our silent auction wines, buying additional bottles in support of Danny and showing him so much love and appreciation.
It makes me feel so proud that we have such a caring and generous community here in Hawaii.

Thank you to Chef Mitchell @lacicciahi, @fukedaboudit, Tyler Uehara and everyone else for their generous donations and hard work to make this possible! 🙏🏻

This months Booze & Bites food and wine pairing will feature three small plates paired with 3 wines of the Douro Valley region in Portugal with an optional dessert course pairing. Hosted by Sky Cameron of Chambers & Chambers and Mud Hen Water’s Chef de Cuisine Alika Chung, this food and wine pairing is designed to be both affordable and approachable featuring hand selected wines and locally sourced ingredients. Tickets are $60 per guest, service charge and tip included with the option to order off of our classic menu throughout the evening. Tickets go fast and we have limited seating so don’t wait! Aloha friends, I have been a longtime friend of WOW (West Oahu Wine) founder and local sommelier Danny Matsushita for over 25 years.

If any of you know Danny or attended any of his WOW wine events, his passion for wine and food is absolutely infectious.

I’m reaching out today to ask for support in helping Danny.
It’s with a heavy heart to inform you all that Danny has been diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer.

We are asking friends to help Danny raise funds during this difficult time by attending a special dinner event at La Ciccia on Tuesday, 8/11.
20% of the proceeds will go to help with Danny’s medical bills.
