Did you hear the story about my 11lb 2oz baby and my 13 minute contraction I had during my labor? This fireball damn near knocked me outta bed from the inside when he would get to kicking. I dreamt of the curls on the back of his neck while he was baking away, and I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that I was having a baby boy. You shoulda heard my triumphant yell when the ultrasound tech proved me right. Scout rolled in as child number two and was his sister’s own from the moment they met. He had the little brother manual memorized from cover to cover before he arrived on the scene, and he was as devoted as he was a shit disturber with her.

You see this photo I picked for the cover? If I could only pick one to keep forever, it would be this one. This is the child of my heart, electrified with play and humor. You never saw a kid so overflowing with appreciation and appetite for life. I’m going to tell you now that this birthday post is hot on the heels of dropping him off at college. HIs turning 18 and walking out my front door in the same breath - that packed a punch for this mama. After watching me live through the first child’s exit, he was a bit worried for me. It’s a rite of passage for us both, and love includes all the parts. But I meant what posted in my story. My nest is not empty. I can feel the ground shake from wherever he is on the planet. That kid doesn’t mess around, whether he’s doing hard things or fun things. He’s out there exploring every inch, wringing out the every last drop, and I have the best seat in the house watching him explode onto the scene.

Happy Birthday, my blue eyed son, my darling young one. Your mama couldn’t be more proud of the man you have become. by @skye_coddington

I was Bop-Bop’s little princess. He was my Norwegian grandfather, and whenever I got to stay with him, I’d snuggle up in the big bed and he’d tell me old fairytales in his thick accent. He’d feed me traditional foods, and he’d always remind me of the family we had back in the home country. Decades later, we finally connected with them through the miracle of the interwebs. Over the years, messages, gifts, and cards were exchanged. I regularly received invitations to visit, and I dutifully promised to bring my crew there. This past year was the tipping point to make good on those vows, and in June we embarked on our journey to the motherland. Our destination was bookended by stops in Copenhagen and Amsterdam. In the latter, I met up with a friend of my aunt’s, who became mine after my aunt’s passing.

We stepped off the plane onto the tarmac and a small crowd of grinning, flag waving Norwegians were standing right there at the gate waiting to greet us. We were generously welcomed into home and hearth, and the following days were filled with stories, history, belly laughs, good food, soccer and Jägermeister, and the most stunning landscapes you could ever wish to see. We met many cousins. I got to see the land my grandfather grew up on and visit the graves of my ancestors. My heart was tenderized by the grief of longing for those I have lost, the joy of being welcomed so fully into familien, and the immensity of the natural beauty that surrounded us. I found myself aching to tell my grandfather, father, aunt, and cousin Kjell all about our adventures….and to thank them for leading me to this place. I can no longer share with them, but I can offer a bit of this adventure to you. Know that I made this slideshow as short as I could stand to, and also sound on, because the soundtrack is delightful. Thanks for joining me, folks… by @skye_coddington

There were once six blind men who stood by the roadside every day and begged from the people who passed. They had often heard of elephants, but they had never seen one; for, being blind, how could they?

It so happened one morning that an elephant was driven down the road where they stood. When they were told that the great beast was before them, they asked the driver to let him stop so that they might understand what he was like.

Of course they could not see him with their eyes, but they thought that by touching him they could learn just what kind of animal he was.

The first one happened to put his hand on the elephant's side. “Well, well!” he said. “Now I know all about this beast. He is exactly like a wall.”

The second felt only of the elephant's tusk. “My brother,” he said, “you are mistaken. He is not at all like a wall. He is round and smooth and sharp. He is more like a spear than anything else.”

The third happened to take hold of the elephant's trunk. “Both of you are wrong,” he said. “Anybody who knows anything can see that this elephant is like a snake.”

The fourth reached out his arms and grasped one of the elephant's legs. “Oh, how blind you are!” he said. “It is very plain to me that he is round and tall like a tree.”

The fifth was a very tall man, and he chanced to take hold of the elephant's ear. “The blindest man ought to know that this beast is not like any of the things that you name,” he said. “He is exactly like a huge fan.”

The sixth was very blind indeed, and it was some time before he could find the elephant at all. At last he seized the animal's tail. “O foolish fellows!” he cried. “You surely have lost your senses. This elephant is not like a wall, or a spear, or a snake, or a tree; neither is he like a fan. But any man with a particle of sense can see that he is exactly like a rope.”

Then the elephant moved on, and the six blind men sat by the roadside all day and quarreled about him. Each believed that he knew just how the animal looked, and each called the others hard names because they did not agree with him. People who have eyes sometimes act just as foolishly. by @skye_coddington

When I decided that kayaking was going to be my birthday activity, I hadn’t considered that it was mid-December and it might not possibly be ideal or comfortable. And then I remembered that I live in paradise. Thank you, Central Coast for the surprise and delight. I love you more than ever.

HBD to me!!!

Thanks for the adventure, Mr. C.

This is our grand dame, Shirley Diquisto. If you came through her door by blood, by marriage, or simply by invitation, you were hers. To be loved by her was to be blessed by a kind of unconditional acceptance….a haven in this harsh world. She cooed over every baby, made every one of us feel cherished. She was, to me, the very spirit of family togetherness.
In the long low days toward the end, she would gather herself enough to ask about the children, and would smile and say, “That’s so nice.” Even in the waning light, she was still grandma, still presiding in her way. She taught me so much about love in her quiet, steady presence.
She did ask us to not make a fuss after she was gone, but I can promise you that all of our broken hearts are full of tribute and gratitude.
I love you, Grandma. Thank you for all of the you that you shared with us.❤️🙏 by @skye_coddington

I waited three weeks to let this guy in the house. He hung around outside all desperate and scrawny, but I didn’t want to take someone else’s cat, y’know? Finally I couldn’t stand it anymore and I sat down with him in the driveway on a very sunny afternoon, and we had a good, long talk about it. We decided it was time, and after finding himself no longer hungry and homeless, the guy did not stop purring for 2 days straight. I called it “singing the song of his people” because it was so loud and passionate.

He was the first cat we’d had as family, and the one to teach my husband that there’s no winning the but-we-don’t-need-a-cat argument. You can guess which human he ended up having the most lap time with. We named him Puss and Boots, and that eventually shortened to Mr. Boots after a super short stint as Pussy.

A few months after he had settled in with us, he started lobbying hard for this other stray to move in with us. Never saw a house cat be friendly with a strange cat like that, so we figured they must have been from the same litter. The new addition ended up being pregnant, and when she had her babies, he was a rock solid uncle and shared parental duties with Mama.

When the puppy moved in a few years later, Boots left the house for three straight weeks. I never knew a cat could look so thoroughly outraged, and the puppy was even still too young to be menace! That eventually passed and the two of them became fast friends. In the later years, they joined forces and formed the infamous Team Mooch, and anytime any cooking was going on in the kitchen or at the barbecue, they were stationed flat in the way of anyone walking by.

Boots was the guy that made sure any guests in our home felt like family. He was the most affectionate cat I've had the pleasure to know. He love bombed anyone who would sit still for the treatment. He sure knew how to host.

He was such a big part of the soul of our family and the kids’ growing up years. It’s a big ol’ tender box of memories wrapped up in heart strings….and he’s tucked safely away in there, purring his brains out, forever a part of Team C. We miss you, Boots. ❤️‍🩹 by @skye_coddington

Saw this white yarrow at Pismo Preserve and decided I wanted it running wild through my garden. I planted it, then read dire warnings about how invasive it is. I waffled. I pulled some out. But then a good patch came up and showed me its stuff. I swear we have the heartiest and most enthusiastic weeds that can be found on the planet here on the Central Coast. It’s a battleground here and these yarrow flowers are good soldiers. Ima plant these everywhere.

Let the wild rumpus start!

I’ve been growing these Annie’s Annuals poppies for years and have been collecting the seeds for the past couple. Did a liberal sprinkling in the fall and happy discovery that these make an amazing cover crop. So easy and so prolific. Don’t blink. They’re only here for a minute. You know this party is attracting the fairies while we sleep.✨🧚🏻‍♂️✨🧚🏼✨#grace #greenthumb #mothernature #anniesannuals #poppies #fairyparty #flowerbomb🧚🏻‍♀️✨ by @skye_coddington

May all beings find happiness
And the cause of happiness.
May they be free of suffering
And the cause of suffering.
May they not be separated
From the perfect happiness
That is free from suffering.
May they abide in great equanimity,
Free from attachment and aversion
To those near and far.
