A few moments in a Monastery high in the mountains of Nepal. I always find my time in these Monasteries so grounding, like every time I spend time with monks their wisdom reminds me how easy it is for me to slow down and let go of expectations - but somehow after a while I always seem to forget.

I spent my time meditating, playing, practicing English, and spending time with the best kind of humans who teach you more about who you want to be. Especially this little boy who had been removed from an unstable home in the remote mountains and was starting to come out of his shell and show his sweet, cheeky side.

This time I’m trying to hold on to the lessons I’ve learnt in these Buddhist Monastaries.

Melasti marks the biggest purification ceremony on the Balinese Hindu calendar. Villagers walk for miles, carrying sacred heirlooms from inland temples to the ocean or another sacred body of water to be cleansed with holy water.

Sacrifices are made and bad karma is killed, purifying the soul, earth and universe in preparation for Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence.

Galungan is a ten day festival in Bali where ancestral spirits visit earth. You always know when the festival is happening as streets are decorated with Penjors - curved bamboo poles with crops and ornaments that guide spirits home.

I was lucky enough to be invited to this temple in the middle of Bali, blessed, and taught how to pray and take part in the ceremony.

With everything happening in Bali right now, I hope this can be a small reminder that the real magic of this island comes from the incredible people and culture that make it what it is. True travel means showing up with respect, curiosity, and genuine interest in whose home you’re in. Start a conversation, ask questions & don’t drive like a lunatic 💛

On the final day of Galungan, Bali’s 10 day Hindu festival, one village celebrates with a unique ceremony - Mekotek.

The men in Munggu village carry long wooden sticks and push them together to form pyramids which the bravest men climb, and then charge into each other with their sticks making a ‘tek tek tek’ noise which the ceremony was named from.

The ritual is a display of unity and is believed to bring protection to the village by warding off evil spirits.
