this is the northernmost place i’ve reached in our country. from that stretch of road, i was facing the west philippine sea. even though this coast is far from the contested shoal, it’s still part of the same waters.our country endured years of colonial rule & war under different superpowers. millions of filipinos suffered before we achieved our independence. yet here we are more than 80 years later still facing the same threats around our waters.when our fishermen are blasted w/ water cannons in the west philippine sea, we’re left pushing for maritime laws & international rulings that have, so far, fallen on deaf ears. we’re transported back to the reality of having to run to the US for support, a position that echoes history. we’re still in a situation similar to when the first forces of japan invaded luzon in WW2.our government, despite decades of independence, and billions in taxes from our hard-earned salaries, has failed to build a country that can stand completely on its own. all of this unfolds while filipinos are deeply fragmented as a people. every discussion quickly turns hostile. even as calamities strike & floods destroy communities, the same divisions remain. our unification as an archipelagic nation is still a dream.it’s hard to listen to someone whose views oppose our own & remain empathetic, especially when disagreements turn into insults. the experiences & concerns of a student dealing w/ traffic in manila may be very different from someone growing up in maguindanao, but we’re still filipinos dealing w/ the same government, carrying the same hope & intention for our country.it’s hard to exercise restraint & push for direct & sustained dialogue w/ aggressors especially when our defenseless fishermen are attacked. a superpower’s efforts to form a strategic triangle across the south china sea w/in the first island chains, & the resolve of Philippine soldiers refusing to leave the brp sierra madre as it rusts in the west philippine sea, may be driven by the same instinct: to protect one’s home & live in peace.diplomacy is the harder path, but it must be the only way. the philippines is worth the effort it takes to do what’s difficult. by @skymarines
