This wasn’t part of the plan… but here we are 30 years later.

In case you were wondering where Synthesis Agency came from… here’s a bit of the story.

Which is a story of finding yourself through music and the dancefloor that I know so many of us ravers and artists resonate with.

From raver to founder, from the dance floor to digital strategy…

Synthesis Agency has been built to serve the underground.

Artist first, music-forward. Always.

You can have a million followers and not be able to sell a thousand tickets.

Areen Kojikian ( @areen_kojikian ) , is the talent buyer for @highvibefest and manages artists via her company Northstar Management, which means she’s on both sides of the pitch.

The metric she actually cares about is market history. Tickets sold under your name, in a real market, where people came for you and nobody else. Everything else is a number that looks good and often does nothing when someone’s deciding whether to book you.

Forget the obsession with follower counts and start focusing on your hard ticket data!

The full episode is out now on YouTube. If you’re an artist trying to get booked more and build something sustainable, this is the one for you. She breaks down how to build market history from nothing, how to make sure you’re clear on your north star as an artist, what she looks for before she’ll manage someone, and how to go back to a festival after you’ve played it and raise your own fee.

This one is loaded! Bring a notebook. šŸ“’

Some of my favorite artists don’t make my favorite music.

A reminder that your story is often more powerful than your music.

Is there an artist you would support even though there music isn’t really your fav?

Is genre up to you?

@evan_hatfield.mp3 plays sitar and makes techno. When people ask what to call it, he tells them that’s their choice. His job, as he says, ā€œis to create as authentically as possible.ā€

Maybe instead of trying to fit into a genre, it’s really about focusing on becoming your own. Tune into Episode 3 of The Skyote Moon Show for more.

Every manager, A&R, booking agent, sync licenser, and talent buyer is saying the same thing.

You must have a clear identity, vision, and story to work with. This is what puts you on the radar as someone they can help and want to support.

They are not there to drag you along... in fact it’s the opposite. Generating momentum yourself FIRST is key and that means putting in the reps.

I can tell you from firsthand experience when their is a lack of clarity from the artist it is almost impossible to market anything.

I think it’s worth considering that this is actually the fun part. The world building, the refining and clarifying what you stand for as an artist and what meaning your music has.

It means staying in constant conversation with yourself and learning to trust what feels right for you.

Thank you @beatport for bringing the community together and creating these opportunities to learn from each other.

When emotion and technique come together as one, the feeling is indescribable.

Evan Hatfield (@evan_hatfield.mp3 ) is a sitar player who makes techno, two worlds that may seem to collide but when combined create a musical experience that is truly a genre of its own. Through a practice of awareness and asking a much deeper question, ā€œam I living my life to the fullest?ā€ you can feel that intention the moment he steps in front of you and begins to perform.

Steeped in Indian classical music lineage, armed with a table filled with synths and sequencers, his sitar and saxophone his fully improvised sets are jaw dropping and inspiring.

Episode 3 of The Skyote Moon Show is up. Evan talks about what Indian classical music taught him about fusing emotion and technique, the studio that burned two weeks after he finished building it, and why he could care less whether you stream his music.

What does a curator actually look for when they are booking a lineup?

With 11 years of curation under his belt for @subtractmusic and @lovelongbeachfestival, @antontumas is paying attention to artists who are serious about the craft and focused more on building something that stands the test of time... not trends.

He goes into more detail on this in Episode 2 of The Skyote Moon Show. So if you’re curious how you can standout no matter where you are in your DJ career, tune in for insights and advice from someone known for his top-notch curation.

Starting from zero is a whole mindset.

I’m on a new artist journey of my own now.

And my mission with The Skyote Moon Show is to create a space for the deeper conversations. The ones that change us both. That reveal the process, the journey, the challenges, highs and lows … the full spectrum of being an artist and creating in a world that tends to reward what’s on the surface instead of the gold hidden deep within.

I know I am here to amplify the voice of the whomever I interview. And I believe eventually the show is going to expand way beyond the electronic music scene but for now I’m excited to begin sharing the real deal from a scene that has given me so much.

Honestly, this made me laugh.

Two amazing DJ’s. Two very different approaches to playing a set.

I love contrast because it’s a reminder there is NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY to be an exceptional DJ. But preparation can put you way ahead of the game.

I’m not interested in the high horse you rode in on lol ... I want to know who you are in that DJ booth and can you deliver something that moves me. And these two are some of the best in the game who do it consistently — shoutout @treavormoontribe and @antontumas aka Big Guy little guy šŸ˜‚

If you haven’t listened to the Skyote Moon Show yet I encourage you to check it out if you want to hear from real voices from the scene, putting in the work, and holding the standard for what the underground is all about.

In the music industry, you’re often either looking to turn a profit, or it’s just a passion project.

What about the middle ground where you can have both?

Anton Tumas ( @antontumas ) built Subtract ( @subtractmusic ) with a very different bottom line than most event promoters.

Instead of starting with the numbers, he started with the kind of event he actually wanted to create, then figured out how to make that sustainable. That meant building the infrastructure of the business in such a way the numbers could work without the vibe getting compromised.

In his words, it’s been a lot of saying no to things that are not it.

I’ve had the honor to work with Anton for the past four years and he has been an invaluable mentor and example of maintaining integrity in an industry that can slowly erode your values from the pressure to ā€œmake it.ā€

Episode 2 of The Skyote Moon Show is out now.
