Episode 025 | Orion

Orion is my favorite thing in the sky.

A few different views of the region, from Orion’s Belt and the Horsehead and Flame Nebulae to the Orion Nebula and Running Man. Easily one of the coolest parts of the night sky.

Processed through AstroWizard.

Episode 024 — LAAS Member Dark Sky Night

Super successful member night under dark skies. I ran the S30 Pro and S50 Pro side by side for most of the night and came home with M8/M20, IC 1396, M45, NGC 7000, the Horsehead and Flame, and M42.

Both scopes also imaged M45 and M8/M20, so I got two completely different takes on the same targets from the same night.

Having two smart scopes going at once was the best part. They kept collecting while I used my 8SE and spent some time seeing what everyone else brought out. The 22-inch, 16-inch and bino scopes were all out there too.

Draco is going to make nights like this even more interesting.

Episode 023: The Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae

For this one, I focused entirely on the processing. The Lagoon Nebula sits at the top of the frame, with the Trifid at the lower left and several smaller emission regions spread across the dense Sagittarius star field.

Processed in AstroWizard using the RC Astro tools, then finished in Lightroom. I’m having a lot of fun learning this workflow and seeing how much structure and color I can bring out.

Episode 022 | Milky Way Over Lockwood

My goal this summer was to photograph the Milky Way. I’ve done that numerous times and have been really happy with some of the results, but now I’m learning how to take the processing a step further and get more out of the data I captured.

This image was taken at Lockwood Valley on August 12, 2026, during the Perseid meteor shower. It’s a stack of 60 30-second frames, tracked with the Move Shoot Move Nomad.

For this one, I stacked the frames and then ran the image through Astro Wizard’s Master Wizard workflow, working with BlurXTerminator, NoiseXTerminator and StarXTerminator for the first time. Watching the dust structure and all of that gold in the Milky Way come out of the stack was probably my favorite part of the process.

The first image is my finished version after Astro Wizard with some final color correction in Lightroom. The second image shows where Astro Wizard had taken the stack before those final color adjustments, with all that gold still coming through.

I’ve got a lot of data from this summer to go back through now, and I’m excited to see what else is hiding in it.

Episode 018: Under Montecito Skies

What started as a family getaway turned into one of the best astronomy weekends I’ve had.

For two nights, Montecito gave us moderately dark skies, an early-rising Milky Way, and enough clear weather to keep me outside until sunrise.

These photos are just a small part of the weekend. Between photographing the Milky Way with my Sony a6700, observing through my Celestron 8SE, and imaging with my Seestar S30 Pro, there was always something to photograph or observe.

I stayed out until 6:00 a.m. both nights. It still didn’t feel like enough time.

Episode 017 – The Swan Nebula (M17)

The Swan Nebula (M17), also known as the Omega Nebula, is one of the brightest star-forming regions in the Milky Way. Located approximately 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, this glowing cloud of hydrogen is illuminated by a cluster of young, massive stars embedded within its core.

Captured with the Seestar S30 Pro from the LAAS Lockwood Valley Dark Site.

Clear skies.

Episode 016

The Lagoon Nebula (M8) and Trifid Nebula (M20) captured with 31 minutes of total integration using the SeeStar S30 Pro.

These neighboring nebulae, located about 4,000–5,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, are among the most spectacular star-forming regions in our galaxy.

Captured under the dark skies at a LAAS observing session.

Clear skies! 🔭✨

Episode 015: Eagle Nebula

The Eagle Nebula (M16) is a massive star-forming region located about 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens.

This post starts with a close-up of M16 and gradually zooms out to show the surrounding star fields and its location within the Milky Way.

Captured from Lockwood Valley with a Seestar S30 Pro.
