Since first grade, I’ve always been the president of something. Not because I wanted a title, but because I’ve always cared about people. I’ve always been the person willing to speak up, help out, and advocate time after time for those whose voices were overlooked or silenced. Even when people didn’t understand what it felt like to not be heard, I made it my mission to be the loudest voice in the room to make sure everybody was okay.

From being Freshman Class President my freshman year, to serving as Campus Activities Board President during my sophomore year, to ending my junior/senior year once again as a president, it has truly been such a beautiful journey. Every season taught me something different about leadership, service, sacrifice, and legacy. I’m beyond blessed that God trusted me with the opportunity to lead and serve my campus community at Huston-Tillotson University.

And to the Revolutionary Administration… we’re finally done. We did it. Through every challenge, event, meeting, late night, disagreement, accomplishment, and memory, we left our mark, and I will forever be grateful for every single person who was part of this journey. @_htsga

To the Apex Administration, congratulations. I already know y’all are going to accomplish incredible things. And to @twoinederful you have such a great mindset and vision. Watching you chase what you said you wanted to do since the moment you stepped onto HT’s campus has been inspiring, and I truly believe you are going to do amazing things with SGA. I have all the faith in the world in you.

As I enter my final semester this fall before graduating, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for the memories, the growth, the love, and the opportunity to serve. Officially inaugurated as the 2025-2026 Student Government Association President, Sky is ready to lead with vision, passion, and purpose!

A proud junior English major from Fort Worth, Texas, Sky has made her mark from the very beginning, arriving with purpose at Ram Training Camp in Summer 2023 and never looking back.

From her impactful role with the Campus Activities Board (2024–2025), to her sisterhood in the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and her advocacy through the NAACP, Sky exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader.

She is fierce, yet full of grace, a dynamic force committed to progress, inclusion, and empowering her fellow Rams.

We are excited to witness the change, excellence, and unity she will bring to our campus community.
Here’s to bold leadership, bright futures, and breaking barriers, congratulations Madam President!

I had an incredible experience this past week attending the UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Mentor Conference! It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on my journey as a scholar, share my research, and speak on a panel about my experiences as a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

Throughout the week, I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas with fellow scholars and mentors, and reflect on the importance of mentorship, community, and intellectual growth. Being able to share my journey and contribute to conversations about my experiences as a scholar made this experience especially rewarding.

I’m grateful for the continued support, mentorship, and opportunities that allow me to grow as a researcher and scholar. This experience reminded me of the importance of sharing our stories, learning from one another, and continuing to create space for Black scholarship and intellectual development.

If you want it done, ask a Black woman.

Not because we have to.

Because history has shown that we will.

This is for every Black woman who has carried more than she should have, been judged more than she deserved, and still chose to lead, love, create, teach, heal, and build. We have never needed permission to define ourselves. Our legacy has always spoken louder than the boxes people tried to place us in.

To every Black woman I’ve encountered you’ve shaped me more than you’ll ever know.

“You gotta be quiet on the creek while yes.”

Most people see a funny meme. I see another example of AAVE and Black rhetorical traditions thriving in real time. Language is living, evolving, and deeply rooted in culture. Even our jokes carry history, creativity, and community. This project explores how everyday moments in Black culture connect to the academic study of language and rhetoric.

The past explains me. The future calls me. The present asks me to choose. I am constantly negotiating between who I am, what I could be, and what I’m meant to be.

One version of me is rooted in memory.
One version is built on possibility.
One version is waiting for me in the future.

The tension between them is not confusion.

It’s becoming.

The conversation isn’t just about one case.

It’s about whose fear is believed.
Whose humanity is protected.
Whose mistakes become headlines.
And whose stories are never fully heard.

As a Black woman, I think about my brothers, my community, and every young Black person forced to navigate a world that often sees them as a threat before it sees them as human.

This isn’t about excusing violence. It’s about confronting the reality that race still shapes how America interprets fear, innocence, and justice.

A difficult conversation, but a necessary one.

What seems like a simple joke is actually part of a much larger African American linguistic tradition one rooted in creativity, community, survival, and rhetorical brilliance. AAVE has never been “broken English”; it is a language system carrying culture, memory, humor, and identity across generations.
