Here it is hobby folks - 75 Years of Topps Baseball Card #1. 🎉🙏

So many thoughts on Card 1’s over the 75 years. Lots of why’s and how’s and I can talk about it all day but here’s some fun facts:

*Why Pafko to kick off Topps baseball? Topps was headquartered in Brooklyn and Pafko’s midseason trade from the Cubs in 1951 was big news. And of course, hometown bias. Likely why Jackie kicked off the ‘53 set, besides breaking the color barrier only a few years before (but also begs the question why not Jackie to set it off in ‘52?!)

*The ‘53 Jackie is by far the most valuable card. I paid 3x what I paid for the ‘54 Williams, the next most valuable in my estimation.

*Alex Rodriguez sets the bar for most solo appearances. He appears 5 times as Card 1. He’s also one of only two players to appear on 2 teams, wearing a Rangers uniform on 2003 Card 1. Roger Clemens is the other (Red Sox in 87 & Yanks in 99).

*Hank Aaron appears 4 straight years, 73 to 76. One is a shared AT Leaders card (73), the others are highlight and record breaker cards. But they still count!

*Topps ran with World Champ team cards 3 consecutive years, 70-72, and never ran a team card before or after. I speculate that the hometown Miracle Mets inspired the 1970 decision and the concept carried over the the following two yrs. (71 Orioles, 72 Pirates)

*Hobby icon Mickey Mantle never appeared as Card 1! Willie Mays appears only once, 1966.

*Twice a league commish is featured, 56 & 59. That’s it. And I don’t expect we’ll see Manfred come 2027. 😆

*Roger Maris in ‘62 was probably the easiest choice ever after he hit 61. Pete Rose as hits king in 1986 + Iron Man Cal Ripken in 2000 also slam dunks.

*13 times a pitcher took the 1 spot including John Lackey in 2007 (!?!?) and Nolan Ryan 3 years straight, from 1990 to 1992. Shohei (22 & 25), Steve Carlton (82 & 84) and Clemens (87 & 99) are the only other pitchers to appear multiple times.

*Derek Jeter’s walk-off hit in his last game at Yankee Stadium immortalized on 2014 Card 1. 🫡

Grail secured! She ain’t the prettiest but she is (finally) mine… 🙏

Have wanted a 52 Mays for the 1 pc for quite some time. And if you know my collection, a good beater will do just fine. I wanted the card, nothing more, and the imperfections helped me stay within my budget. Happy collector. Say hey! 🎉🐐

New add to the PSA 1 collection. Who was here when I direct subbed and nailed the PSA 10 on this card? Pop 4?! Sold via Probstein Auctions in June 2020?! 😭 Coming full circle with this 1 and (mostly) no regrets. Hahaha.

1985 Topps Kirby Puckett in a 1 holder. An iconic card from my childhood in its most rare grade.

Been wanting to add this for a minute and finally got it for next to nothing thanks to @card_of_the_day_. Just don’t ask me how or where I got it because while I’m generally transparent I won’t tell this time for fear of pushing up prices of cards that I want to own for cheap. It’s a PSA 1, it should be cheap!

Pop 16, only 18,241 graded higher. 😮‍💨🙏

Perfect mail day - an omen?! 🏀🙏

Been a fan 45 years and I’m hoping and expecting we slay the dragon, bring home the chip TO-NIGHT. No missed finger rolls, no Reggie 3’s, no Starks 2-18, no Charles Smith missed layups, no 20 yrs of irrelevance and misery, even f**k Linsanity, we need the Larry O or nothing and let’s get it tonight!! Please basketball Gods, please…

And yeah, the Orange Prizm Ewing /49 is real nice but f**k the card too, I’m thinking only about a championship TO-NIGHT!! LFGK!! 😭🙏🗽🧡💙

LA Dodgers team physician Neal ElAttrache is being investigated by MLB for his involvement in Connor McGregor’s PEDs use. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dodgers players (Ohtani?!) are exposed as users, all things considered. Link in bio, stay tuned! 👀

Cannot wait for tonight!! 🗽🧡💙

True story. I was at the last @nyknicks Finals win. 1999 Finals, Game 3. My late dad worked private security for a very wealthy man and I was blessed with two courtside seats, 3 rows behind @officialspikelee. Spike signed the back of the ticket with a not so great pen. I ran into Matt Dillon and formally introduced myself to Allen Iverson, who was at the game with @fatjoe. What a night. I’ll never forget it.
