Not long ago I set out on a ride to cover several Great Trails along the West Coast of New Zealand, inspired by @paysonmcelveen to ride all three and the roads in between in under 24hours - self supported.

I called it - The Great Trails Ride.

The ride started in Blackball at the trail head of the Paparoa at 1504 and I headed off into the rain and a strict time to finish the trail in - as it had to be completed before dark (40mins after sunset). After a bit of laughing at myself and some good trail and nature I popped out onto the west coast in good time and on time - just. 1836.

4 hours up the road and I entered the Old Ghost Road Trail from Lyell Camp and began the night section just before 11pm. I love this part of the ride and find it hard to put in words why. I saw a kiwi, and many other birds, the moon was full and the sky was clear. I popped back out onto the West Coast a little tired and in good spirits. 0454.

3 hours along the road and a sunrise with more twitching (bird watching), I reached the trail head of the Heaphy via Karamea. The Heaphy was crazy beautiful as it always is, and my mind had become over stimulated, I was a little high on endorphins, and fatigue. And although the last 4 hours felt incredibly hard, I also felt great. 1225.

390km - 200 of that is trail, 7500m of vert, 21 hours 39 minutes and 19 seconds. A new fastest known time and the first time this course had been completed ‘self supported.

Pump and go on repeat 🔁🔁🔁
Mana levels have replenished and it feels good to be getting back at it.
Im pretty bad for taking tools for mechanicals or misshaps, but the tech is catching up and its getting a lot easier to pack in everything when heading out every day.

@cycplus_official sent out one of their latest tools last month the AS2 Ultra 🤝🤝🤝, I’ve been using it most days since.

It is easy to stash away being just slightly bigger than my AirPods case, has a surprisingly good battery life (a few full tyres from 0psi) and can bead tubeless 😻

The Great Trails Ride releasing on Youtube this coming Friday the 31st 6.30pm NZT 👀👀👀 with BIG thanks to @tom_christie for filming and editing 😮‍💨

Over the 31st April and 1st of May I headed out for a smash and grab on the West Coast of New Zealand. Day to night to day again over extremely varied terrain. Having the gear and nutrition sorted (a bit of luck too) I could just enjoy this stupidly long challenge @paysonmcelveen set for us kiwis 💀💀💀
