Rest In Peace, Alex.

After being stuck in a rabbit hole of everything coming out of the Texas scene during the “TX Takeover” era, and the fastcore/hardcore bands from California that HCProductions101 was religiously uploading sets from, it felt like things had started to slow down in those areas. That’s when I stumbled across what was happening in Denver and realised just how red hot that scene was at the time.

The first bands that come to mind are Blood Loss, Videodrome, Creep Stare, GOON and Negative Degree, but the band that stood out to me most was Combat Force.

A tip of the cap to that no-nonsense Oi!/hardcore sound that bands like Negative FX, Shipwrecked, 86 Mentality and Reckless Aggression did so well.

Alex’s vocals were ferocious and a perfect fit for the band. I always felt Combat Force knew exactly what they wanted to do and how to do it.

Alex was a good dude and should be remembered for more than just the episodes people heard about when he was down and out. I only got the chance to talk to him online, but we traded band recommendations and talked about the history and current state of our local scenes. He even put me onto some Aussie rap he was really into — sorry mate, I couldn’t stomach that shit.

Yeah holy shit this rules, even if I keep calling them “Freezen Out”. I reckon I’ve played this close to everyday since I discovered it. Dynamo, The Icemen, Cro-mags I think of when listening to this. “It’s for the deal mannnn!”

-Rat Bait - Promo 24
Second release by R F B, another belter. Stompy/ Agro HC way it should be really… Catchy riffs good dance parts, a lot like your favourite hardcore bands between 2010-2014. I hope with the next release they keep the tradition of having a track about Roberts luck, stop walking under ladders or something.. ends with a good SSD cover, I had a arvo nap yesterday and missed their xmas eve show.

-Beach Waste - Sorry For The Wait
Don’t be sorry for nothing, especially when you’re only around the ages of 22 and are playing better HC/punk than most grown ass people. This is a throwback to the 80s, reminds me a lot of Aggression, Rat Pack, Scared Straight and all them other Nardcore Gems, Skank til you spew.

-Who’s To Blame - Demo
Omission crew doing good things, I won’t kiss their dick too much. Straight Ahead worship and I guess much like Free Spirit in their FFO, ripping 80s hardcore, ain’t nuthin wrong with that.

-The Slads - Tough Times Oi / Punk from Philly, fantastic band that some what reminded me of Hired Goons. Panic Attack was stuck in my head for a while, the next track T.W.N.L is some real good shit that reminds me a lot of Reckless Aggression track “Melbourne Rats” that was originally by Lifes Fate?

Total Vacation - TV
Their release in 2023 was pretty fucking great as well, fantastic title too “You Rich Dorks Got Everything But The Riffs”. This shit rules, reminds me of Lockjaw but sped up and the kinda thing you would hear on the Kangaroo Records catalogue. That dirty rat goes for the Dodgers, don’t hold that against him. Maybe issue #3 he will have something to say.

Kissland- 7”
New Melbourne fast core band, “No Slow All Go.” For real. Hopefully this band kicks off a fast core wave in Australia, great record and even better band live. Some parts remind me of UPS. by @slamskankslamskank

I often think about this tour, this show and band. After annoying the fuck out of the members online for years and they finally tour in 2019, as I said to someone earlier the TX take over was real, Texas put out some fucking good bands at the time. What a night, Cereal Killer, Hacker, Rapid Dye , SJN and Glue! My body still aches from this tour, I don’t think the camera angle gives justice of the pile on at the end… #nothing by @slamskankslamskank

Alright Geelong! Christina from @blow_blooddd has been working hard with touring overseas bands and putting on shows. We are lucky enough to have Electric Chair from Washington play a show!

Supporting is new hardcore band BELT, who rule (FFO, Total Abuse, Leather Lickers, NUB), Melbourne punk band @xlothariox , who are currently touring America, and local punkers @eyerollgeelong .
