5 Books (or series) that made me a better man

And that I would absolutely recommend to any guy (or anyone, really) looking to be a better version of themselves.

What books have made you a better version of yourself?

Books / series mentioned and (one reason) why:
1. Faithful and the Fallen - Father figures
2. Bound and the Broken - Unwavering loyalty to loved ones
3. Songs of Chaos - An unshakeable sense of right and wrong
4. Lord of the Rings - Courage in the face of immeasurable fear
5. There is No Antimemetics Division - Truly sacrificial love for the better of one's partner and the world at large

The Silverblood Promise Review

What an absolute joy ride this book was.

I liked it from the first chapter, and I adored it, its characters, its world and all its mysteries by the end.

I cannot recommend this enough, and I have even higher hopes for book 2, The Blackfire Blade, which I've heard is even better.

@jamesloganauthor will be an insta-buy author for me going forward, and I cannot wait to see how this story progresses.

Welp, I'm definitely not posting often these days, but I am still around, reading, lifting, lurking in comment sections, etc. So when I saw this fit and nerdy 30 day challenge being put on by @alexliftsbooks, @fitandfantasizing, @booksta.bro.joe and some other folks on here, I figured I'd have some fun with it.

Definitely won't be posting every day for all 30 days, and I'm technically late to start, but I'll be checking in with the group and posting occasionally for accountability.

50 pushups, squats, lunges, crunches, and mountain climbers every day for 30 days. And 30 pages per day (or the equivalent on audiobook), with 1 burpee per page missed, but that sounds way worse than just hammering out the reading (or listening 😅).

Started my Day 1 today after my regular lifting session, so I'll be going through ~November 12th while everyone else goes through the 10th, I believe.

Started the second Red Rising trilogy earlier this month and am about 30% of the way through Iron Gold. Should get it finished and at least start Dark Age in the next couple weeks.

Thank you to @tbbpublishing for letting me be a part of yet another cover reveal.

This time we have Ire by Scott Drakeford (@thescottdrakeford) coming January 2027.

A little about Ire and Scott from TBB's website:

"Ire, previously published as Rise of the Mages, will be revised and edited and republished in January 2027.

Drakeford said: “I’ve watched the incredible work that Matt Holland, Marcus Gipps, and the entire Broken Binding team have been doing for years, hoping to someday be a part of what I think is the best publishing company in the world. I’m elated and honored to be joining an immensely talented stable of authors published by The Broken Binding Publishing, starting with a fully revised, definitive edition of the Age of Ire series.”

Gipps said:  "Scott’s books were on my radar before I even joined TBB, and I was always surprised they hadn’t found a home in the UK. I’m delighted to be able to bring them to a new audience here, and can’t wait to read the third book!""

"A young warrior and his improbable band of allies face impossible odds as they seek to rescue his brother from the servants of the Fallen God.

Emrael Ire is a student of war with lofty ambitions, despite being so poor his boots are more hole than leather. He and his talented younger brother Ban work hard to build themselves a better life at the Citadel, a school that specializes in both infusori Crafting and military arts.

Their lives are upended when the power-hungry Lord Governor of the neighboring province invades the school with the help of a sinister sect of priests devoted to the newly awakened Fallen God of Glory. Many of the infusori Crafter students are captured―Including Ban.

Though Emrael stands little chance against the Lord Governor and his armies, he’s desperate to save his brother―even if that means accepting the help of allies with uncertain motives, or becoming a practitioner of a forbidden magic. There is nothing he won't sacrifice to save his brother, but what happens when the cost of success is not his to pay?"

Definitely looking forward to getting into this series!

The Exile Traditional Cover Reveal!!!

Thank you so much to @ryancahillauthor and @tbbpublishing for letting me participate once again in the traditional cover reveal for The Bound and The Broken. This time, we have The Exile, the story of Dayne, the hell he went through in his young adulthood, and the adversity he overcame to be the person we only start to meet in Of Darkness and Light.

ODAL was great, and I thought it built on the foundation laid by both The Fall and Of Blood and Fire very well. That being said, it was The Exile, this novella, that cemented this series as something special in my mind.

Ryan does such a good job with these backstories, and you can absolutely, unequivocally see his growth as a writer and story teller in this book. I cannot wait to have my hands on another copy (even though I don't need it 😅).

Mid-year Reading Update

Oh hi. Long time no see.

I know I'm super late to this (and haven't posted in like 3 weeks?!), but I promise I have a good reason!

Syd and I moved into our next house at the end of June (peep the new backdrop 👀), and I have not had time for anything else. 😅 I am barely keeping up with my audiobooks, let alone reading with my eyeballs, or posting on here.

Things are finally starting to slow down, and I'm going to be easing my way back into the space. So, to start things off nice and easy, here is my long overdue mid-year top five!!!

5. Silverblood Promise
4. Butcher's Masquerade
3. The Exile
2. Gardens of the Moon
1. Wrath

It has been an absolutely killer year for reading, and it was so hard to narrow this down. Silverblood is just solid, familiar fantasy with some good twists and turns, and I would happily recommend it to anyone. I'm officially closing in on the end of my DCC journey with about 50% left of Inevitable Ruin before I get caught up with Parade of Horribles. I loved both 5 and 6, but I can definitely see why 5 is so many people's favorite. The Exile is phenomenal. It's such a turning point for Ryan's writing, imo, and part of me wishes it was a full novel and not just a novella. May-la-zan was an absolute hit, and Gardens was excellent. Can't wait to get back to this world. And last but the absolute antithesis of least, Wrath. My heart was so heavy and so full at the end of this series. I will always STAN The Faithful and the Fallen without question.

Hope y'all are well and have been getting to read plenty! More soon (probably 😅).

Now this one was quite interesting.

Spell your name with books you've read challenge. Challenged by @cornerstonefitness1

I had to pull an audible because I genuinely couldn't think of a book I own let alone one I have read that starts with "J" 😂😂😂. I finally remembered I own Jade City, but I haven't read it. Then I ran into the same problem with "U" 😅. So, Justin was off the table, and we went with my handle.

Pulled out some books from my English major days for this one too, which was fun. I ignored "The" in titles because that typically gets ignored in alphabetical lists anyway.

S - Silverblood Promise
L - Letters of Earnest Hemingway (read these for my undergrad capstone)
A - All Systems Red
T - There is No Antimemetics Division
T - Tales of Mystery & Imagination (read a ton of Poe in highschool and undergrad)
E - Eragon
R - Ruin
R - Return of the King
E - Empire of Silence (current read; kinda cheating)
A - Ascendant
D - DCC
S - Silmarillion

This may be one of my last posts for a minute. Packed away like a third of our library today because we're moving this week. Don't know how much I'll be on here or able to read while we get moved out and moved into the new place but cannot wait to get the new library slowly but surely setup and then share that!

Happy reading, y'all.

Huge shout-out and thank you to @thebeardedbookmark for sending me these from @sigils.

I have been meaning to read Ironbound for entirely too long, and now I really have no excuse.

I am so grateful to have crossed paths with Cam, to have found the community I have on here, and to continue to watch as that community grows.

Thanks again, dude. You're the man!!!

Day 7: Your next two reads

It's been a pretty epic year of reading, and it's only getting better. Started Malazan last month. Started Sun Eater this month. Next two reads will be continuing on with those before getting back to The Bound and The Broken, with just two books and 1 novella there before the last novella of the series comes out later this year, and then we just wait on Of Gods and Ashes.

Best reading year yet, and it's not even close.

7 Day Challenge - Day 6

Day 6: A book you thought you wouldn't like but did (or loved).

Had to modify this prompt a little bit because I typically don't read things I don't think I'm going to like. 😅 It's how I basically never DNF anything.

If it's not in my wheelhouse, I'm pretty hesitant or do a fair amount of digging before actually giving something a shot.

So, with the second installment in The Murderbot Diaries, I didn't know if I'd love it or like it all that much because I thought All Systems Red was fine, but it wasn't extraordinary. I think it fell victim to the BookTok/Bookstagram hype cycle a bit.

Given what I do for work, I knew I had to keep going and give it all an honest shot, and I'm glad I did because I did end up enjoying the second novella quite a bit, and I'm excited to get back to the rest soon.

7 Day Challenge - Day 5: Favorite FMC

There is No Antimemetics Division by QNTM absolutely took me by surprise earlier this year in the best of ways. I loved it. I was utterly confused by it. I was dragged into a world that seemed so similar but so foreign at the same time, so hauntingly disturbing, and then so rewarding at the end.

Marie Quinn is the FMC and a total badass. She is wicked smaht, selflessly loving, and morally unshakeable.

I would highly recommend this one if you haven't read it yet and don't mind working through the fog. The payoff is worth it.
