Gotta Ramble On
Holland - April 2025

Holland will always be a special place for me. I used to not care so much as a kid; dealing with the time change always distracted me. But now coming back as an adult it’s become a place of reflection for me. Whenever I feel the world is moving a bit too fast, it’s nice to come here where in certain parts time seems to stand still. This trip was all about enjoying time with family. This year marked the 50th anniversary of Barrelhouse, a band, if you’ve talked to me in recent years, I talk about ad nauseam. My moms uncles band and this year they said was the farewell tour so wants missing it for the world (but I’m hoping for an Ozzy Osbourne situation) I also met with my grandma who for the past few years has been battling Alzheimer’s. Her currents events get scattered but her past memories can come thru and when they do, you listen. The 8th slide is a photo of my great grandmother Christina Otay-Rijken and was likely taken in Semarang although the family was from Padang, West Java.
I didn’t post any photos from my visit to Rotterdam. Maybe a separate post. In all my admiration of the old history of The Netherlands I saw first hand the changes that city had to go thru after it was carpet bombed in 1940 leaving almost nothing except the church which I visited. The before and after brought me to tears and I couldn’t even fathom the resilience of the people at the time to roll their sleeves and complete rebuild their city. There’s a lot I could learn from those people. War is stupid. I’ll be coming back more often but for now here’s to appreciating what came before but also keeping on the path forward. taken in The Netherlands by @slayleb
