A pile of puppies. Three days old. Rosie Cotton is a very good momma dog. Tiny Mr. Blue Sky, the runt, added 25 grams of weight since yesterday. It's a full-time job minding them so the little ones get fed and are gaining weight.

Behold the classic English cheese-and-pickle crisp sandwich. This is a savory texture-engineered sandwich: pillowy white bread, firm sharp cheddar, sticky, sweet-tart Branston pickle spread, crunchy salty crisps, and creamy butter. And note - no skimping was done on the crisps. Almost every bite alternates soft/crunchy and rich/acidic. You could trim off the crusts, cut them diagonally into triangles, and serve them at afternoon tea.

But how does it rate against the sandwich at the top of my list - a properly made BLT? No contest. Bacon brings smoke, salt, fat and crunch; tomato brings acid, sweetness and juice; lettuce brings fresh crunch; and the mayo ties the whole damned thing together.

This British sandwich may be clever, but the BLT is timeless architecture, the Parthenon of all sandwichdom. Still, a change is as good as a holiday, and if you're up for something new and different have a go at this for lunch.

September 1st means time to check the grapes. The Cabs and Merlots are looking good. Brix is just over 21%. I'll give them another week hoping some of the green ones will get with Verasion. This will be the first season the three year old cab vines have produced much fruit.

Unfortunately the Chards, hit hard by the spring freeze, didn't make many clusters. The leaves of the table grape vines, mostly Thompsons, although appearing water-stressed, did ok. The poodles chased raccoons out of them early this morning.

Bottom line - the double freeze really impacted the Chards but the reds (later to bud) look good. I doubt I'll get enough juice to attempt any wine making this season, so it will be another fine vintage of Aggie's Blend jelly.

Day 7, Saturday August 22 - I made it a half mile from my hotel in Winthrop before the rain started. Fortunately I had donned my rain suit and was fine. This morning I rode west through some spectacular scenery in North Cascades National Park. A nice ride even in the drizzle.

I'd downloaded an audio book called "Finding Your Walden" about Henry David Thoreau’s philosophy of living a good life and how to apply it in today's society. Good listening.

I've been enjoying riding curvy two lane mountain road now for week. Today the rent came due and I had to go through Seattle to get to Celeste and Mariah's place in Allyn across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. I'm not sure what caused such a massive traffic jam on a Saturday afternoon, but traffic near the intersection of I-5 and I-90 was stop and go for 45 minutes. But at least the it had stopped raining.

Finally made it to Allyn and delivered my wedding gift to Celeste and Mariah and then we had a nice dinner at The Boat House. We watched Dead Poets Society when we got home. It'd been a few years since I'd seen it. Wonderful film.

Tomorrow I turn toward home. That's always the hardest part of any trip. Just ask Odysseus.
