Help us spruce up Central Ninth!

Join the Central Ninth Community Council on Saturday, November 14, from 10 am to 2 pm for a neighborhood cleanup at the West Temple Off-Ramp and MeadUp public space.

We’re teaming up with Salt Lake City’s Love Your Block Program to pick up litter, clear weeds and debris, and make a few improvements to MeadUp, including installing a new bench and adding safety caps to the futsal court fencing.

Come for an hour or stay for the whole event! Every helping hand makes a difference.

When: Saturday, November 14 | 10 am – 2 pm
Where: Volunteer check-in at 939 S. West Temple (parking lot)

We’ll provide tools, gloves, safety glasses, water, and snacks. Just bring weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, and a willingness to pitch in.

Visit centralninth.org to register in advance so we can coordinate projects and supplies.

Let’s show our neighborhood a little love and keep making Central Ninth a great place to live, work, and gather! by @slcdistrict5

Salt Lake City is a long-standing member of Utah Renewable Communities: a group of 16 local communities across Utah working with @rockymountainpower to launch the Community Clean Energy Program. The Program will give Salt Lakers the power to choose affordable, net-100% renewable electricity, supporting healthier families, communities and the environment.

Early next year, Rocky Mountain Power customers in Salt Lake City will be automatically enrolled in the Program with the option to opt out. Participating households will pay an extra $4 on their monthly Rocky Mountain Power bill. Households enrolled in Rocky Mountain Power’s Home Electric Lifeline Program (HELP) will participate for free. The best way to get on HELP is to apply for the Home Energy Assistance Target (HEAT) program and automatically receive the benefits of both offerings.

Another step forward for Ballpark. ⚾

The Salt Lake City Council has approved zoning changes for the Ballpark and surrounding city-owned properties, aligning the zoning with the Ballpark Community Design Plan.

The changes prepare the area for future redevelopment envisioned through the Ballpark NEXT process, including new places to live, shop, eat, and gather, while supporting the public spaces and neighborhood connections that are central to the plan. The zoning also requires active ground-floor uses, such as shops and restaurants, along a portion of 1300 South.

This doesn't mean construction starts tomorrow. There is still considerable work ahead. Redevelopment will happen over time and through multiple phases. But each step moves Ballpark from a community-developed vision toward implementation.

The vision is set. Now we're preparing Ballpark for what's next. by @slcdistrict5

What does it mean to lead with humanity?

Salt Lake City Councilmember Erika Carlsen @erikaforslc joins Rocky and Tessa for a conversation about compassion, grief, community, and the power of making people feel seen.

From navigating disagreement to understanding the stories we add to our own suffering, Erika shares what her experiences in leadership, loss, and service have taught her about connecting with others.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone isn’t a solution. It’s the space to feel seen.

I want to recognize our neighbor Margaret Coppin for organizing the effort to preserve the iconic Coachman’s Dinner & Pancake House sign. With help from community partners, she organized a GoFundMe and held multiple fundraisers across our district, raising enough money to move and restore the historic sign.

Margaret’s work, and the community’s response to it, show us that when neighbors come together, anything is possible.

Last month, I joined @slcdistrict5 Council Member Carlsen, @slcmayor and other community leaders to help to break ground on Camden Court (390 W 1300 S), in the Ballpark neighborhood. This new development will provide 96 income-restricted apartments for households earning 60% of the area median income or less.

Thank you to Chelsea Investment Corporation, @slc.cra and everyone who played a role in making this affordable housing project a reality.
