NERD ALERT - Many years ago at friend Elsa's horse's barn in Palmetto, they had a pile of shell sand to use for fill dirt. I picked through and didn't look up for an hour, finding all kinds of perfectly intact fossil seashells. When Beowulf lived in Parrish, that barn, too, had a shell pile. I found even more, searching through every time I visited Beo.
Shells I have never seen on any Florida beach just sittting there in dirt. Cowries, murex, spindles, cup-and-saucers, augers, even a perfect little carrier shell with little shells still attached. (But never any shark teeth. I think these fossils may pre-date sharks -?)
They dump these treasures in construction as a base for roads. Criminal to a nerd like me. by @sleeburgess

RANDOMONDAY
Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster) was a phenomenally good illustrator and writer. These are 2 of many clever, hilarious kids' books, and his drawings in them are terrific. by @sleeburgess
