The Balls of Power

Living inside a crumbling empire feels very unreal. Especially if you live miles away from the very balls of power. During the Bronze Age collapse, there were clay tablets still in the kiln, trying to make calculations, trying to keep track of numbers. Often, when a civilization crumbles, the average Joe and Jane are mostly just keeping their head down, trying to get their work done so they can go home to their family. Not so much for this empire. Mostly because we all have a window into the surreal death spiral in our back or front pocket. The burning air and the boiling sea becomes impossible to ignore, even if you're not the one personally burning or boiling.

When the fascist empire brings their imperialism home, that's when you know things are rough. ICE continues to round people up, but quieter now. 50,000 of our neighbors were arrested in July, most with no criminal records, guilty of nothing more than having a funny name and brown skin. Constitution? What's that?

Meanwhile, the military continues to flail in Iraq. Our neighbors hate us. Our enemies laugh at us. The Long Summer continues to be the hottest one on record (so far.) So keeping our head down and focusing on our work isn't really an option anymore. Maybe it never was. So keep your head up and on a swivel. Talk to your neighbors. Speak up. Speak out. Don't brood. It turns out Platner was a piece of shit after all. The warning signs were there, obviously, but it's a strange phenomenon with liars who are (ostensibly) on your side and are powerful: You want to believe them. You want to believe IN them. And before you know it you've become an accomplice in your own corruption and humiliation.

I suppose it's good to learn about it now before he comes to have any sort of power. Bless his victim for coming forward. Bless all victims for coming forward, even when it's no guarantee the perpetrator will ever receive any kind of punishment. Think of all the victims of the Epstein Files, still waiting for their justice to be served!

I can't help but think if Platner were a centrist (Clinton) or a conservative (Trump,) he'd be well on his way to being president right now. Obviously, this isn't a left/right thing, but a man/woman thing. Give a man a little bit of power and a little bit of control over people and more often than not he abuses it.

Fortunately, I wasn't very vocal about my support of Platner, but I do look back on whatever small defense I had with regret, as I'm sure a lot of people do right now, and I thank goodness I didn't write very much about him.

Political comment, like sports, can sometimes require a short memory, and it's useless to dwell too much or beat yourself too hard when a mistake is made. If there's a lesson to be learned it's the need for a vetting process like the DSA has (Platner, fortunately, was not a DSA candidate) and use that to get the best possible candidate for the job.

The Davos speech. I mean, what can you add to that?

Every country on Earth is just so sick of our shit lol. Every country on Earth knows we elected a syphilitic lunatic who embodies every ugly American stereotype to be our leader. Now we've wrecked our standing in the world state, and it's going to take decades to get it back.

For those of you who don’t know, our country has been hijacked by an actual yahtzee phredophile death cult called MAGA, or Make America Great Again. In the past decade or so, this Yahtzee p-do cult has taken over one of our political parties, the GoP, which stands for Guardians of Phredophiles. The head of this cult and this political party is a yahtzee phredophile grapist who, not unlike the Austrian painter, is also an incompetent crazy person who is trying to do as much damage to his country and his people as possible before his final moments in his bunker. Inshallah.

Of course, it could go all sorts of ways. It’s funny to me how some of Trump’s best qualities would be negatives on the average person. For example, one of his best traits, and I mean this unironically, is that he’s a coward. Can you imagine if Trump actually had the courage of his convictions? If he was actually able to follow through on these implied threats he's been giving in these speeches? That’s the alternate timeline I’m sincerely glad we’ve avoided.

Everything that’s happening could change tomorrow. Remember when we all thought he was going to die on Labor Day? That was fun. I mean, he looks like hell. He can barely speak. He can barely form a coherent sentence. Literally all he does is lie and whine, and all the other countries are finally getting wise to that fact. And I’ll grant you I’m whining right now, but that’s why I’m not the president. And at least I'm not lying.

I do want to say a couple things about Davos and the WEF as an organization. I admit I had never heard of Davos until this week, and kept confusing it with the Doctor Who villain Davros. Anyway, this is where the financial elites talk about how they're going to exploit the global South. Trump came up against that, trying to exploit the global North, trying to pretend he's the only bastar by @sleepbomber

Venezuela and the Further Self-destruction of MAGA/Groypers/America First

At first, I was shocked. Because the Trump regime managed to do things competently for once. In my mind, everything these guys do starts off with rolling a natural 1. So it blew my mind that they were able to do without accidently gassing themselves or being drunk, as an ICE agent would do. Kidnapping a head of state while getting none of your guys killed in the process is a level of competence I didn't think these guys were capable of (of course the 80+ Venezuelans that were killed in the process don't count.(

But this wasn't the Derp State I was looking at. This was the Deep State. The one I kept hearing from Q-Anon or whatever they're calling themselves these days. These were the scary people in black helicopters who can and absolutely will ruin your day.

I wrote the previous two paragraphs before a member of the American Gestapo called ICE murdered a woman in Minneapolis. The Derp State and the Deep State are synchronizing. What's next? Stay Tuned. by @sleepbomber

Somehow, when I wasn't paying attention, things got sort of bad. I’m speaking of my “career,” which I'm hoping one day I can refer to without using scare quotes. I woke up one day middle-aged, 10k in debt, resenting friends and family for writing books and making it look easy.

Those are the negatives. There are plenty of positives. First and foremost, if things had gone a little differently I likely would have died or ended up in prison. So being alive and (relatively) free is a huge blessing. Second, I started doing T M this year, and the effect this has had on my mental state has been immensely positive. I don't quite feel like failure is inevitable as I have in the past. Capital D Depression is still there and can rear its ugly head on some days, but those days get fewer and farther between as the deeper and more frequently I dive.

Third and most important is I have a Great Love in my life who deserves much of the credit for helping to pull me out of the brink and for coaching me in the subtle art of getting a handle on things. Every day I am above ground and sucking in oxygen is a testament to Her talents. All my future success will be dedicated to Her.

So obviously lots of big plans for 2026. As the world crumples, my own life and the people around me will thrive. Watch this space for further details by @sleepbomber

Is there gas in the car? Yes there's gas in the car!

I make a lot of references to a big Ancient History Deep Dive I began after having quite the nervous breakdown in 2017. I wanted to know all I could about humanity and this thing called civilization. It's hard to overemphasize just how doomed I felt like we all were. I mean, don't get me wrong, we're still doomed, but it was oddly therapeutic to rake the coals for any clue as to how we came to be this way. I went year by year, going through each time period with the seriousness of a scholar, and I imagined myself in each era as much as I existed out in the real world.

Until recently, I didn't quite know what to do with any of this information as not much of it was applicable to the here and now. It was honestly just therapy. And if I were to, I don't know, DO something about it, it almost felt like that would cheapen it somehow. It was only until recently when the story that needed to be told came around in the narrative. Because, really, the narrative is what it's all about.

Christmas has come to a new meaning this year. The solstice, when things are at their darkest, the only time a holy light can come shining through.

The end of one story. The start of another. What can one do with ashes? Find the holiest light you can find and hang on.

I used to teach English at a semi-prestigious university in the United States. I've been told to my face I got out of teaching at the right time (2019) because everything went and got “ultrawoke” shortly thereafter. They were right, but not in the way that they think. The identity politics of the Christian nationalist fascists has gotten totally out of hand and, truth be told, I would be a little bit scared to teach these days. What if a student doesn't engage with the text and uses their faith as a sword and shield to come after my job? What if my bosses elect not to come to my defense and instead prove why they are the lowest ranked state in terms of education? What if I quote Charlie Kirk or ask my students to engage in some critical thinking (the thing the Derp State hates the most) and the chuds come after me?What then? Hm?

The way I see it, since the federal government doesn't seem particularly interested in educating the population, we really need to educate ourselves. We need thousands of Mr. Rogerseseses to fill the void. Not just online, but in our communities too. Mutual Aid isn't just for money and food. It's for mental money and brain food too. Something that the Derp State is allergic too.
